I just received a call from my favorite gunshop asking if I were interested in a model 16 with box. I'm not familiar with this model. Serial #k3767XX rated at 90%. what would be a fair price?

Close to $3K. Seriously.

If it's beat up and ugly, maybe $2000-2200.

If it's 99+% with the original tools and literature in the box, over $3K.

There were fewer than 4000 Pre-16s and 16s made, if you leave out the full underlug 16-4 model that was introduced some years later. They are rare, they are in demand, and they are costly. I consider myself blessed to have one, an early Pre-16 from 1949. I can't imagine what it would be like to have two or even more.

Thanks, asking price is 1850 but I can probably get it for 1700.

Jump on it. If the blue is at all worn or has some dings or scratches, it is still a K-32 shooter. Over a year ago, before I connected with the one i have now, I was considering a semi-beat up and even slightly modified revolver at $1500. But I just couldn't do it and decided to spend the extra money for something in better shape.

I don't see how you can go wrong at even the asking price. If you can get it for a little less, so much the better.

Thanks, They are holding it for me. I will be looking at it this weekend. If it looks good I'll post some pictures on Monday.

Per the Standard Catalog of S&W, the gun with that serial number was made in 1959. Although David is in California and therefore has a skewed sense of value compared to the rest of the country (due to the supply and demand situation) he is pretty much right on here.

If you're serious about wanting to own a Model 16, DON'T wait until the weekend. Go now. If you don't get it, PM or email me with the gunshop phone number.

My single biggest gun buying mistake was a few years ago passing on a pre 16 with box. for 850. in PRK no less. my buddy at the shop kept asking what the heck i needed.32 for ?... of course when i came to my senses they had sold it. somebody made out like a bandit on that one.

of course i would have bragged here about it and then probly flipped it for a tidy profit but it still grinds me i passed it up

We have one of the 196 guns made post war with pre war parts, it is alot of fun to shoot! very accurate too.

I picked the gun up this afternoon. It really looks great. One small scratch on the barrel but pretty minty otherwise. The box has some wear but not bad considering it's age. It had the oil paper but no tools. I'm at the ranch now and internet access is slow. I'll post pics after the weekend when I return home. Thanks for all the helpful advice.

That looks like a nice Regulation Police Target Pontiaker.

As far as the K -32s go, theres a 16-2 that is in very nice condition for $2,450 which has been sitting for about 4 months now at Pro Gun Services. The 16-2 are the hardest to find of the model marked.
These guns are nice, but highly over priced. Anyone asking $3,000 or more for these is just gouging people.

For every "gouger" at these prices there must be a willing "gougee," which makes me think that a simple market rather than untrammeled venality is at work; those are the wrong nouns to use.

It's just supply and demand. There are twice as many RMs as there K-32 Masterpieces, so you'd think they'd be half as expensive, right? Or since there are only one-third as many K-22/40s as there are K-32s, they should be three times as expensive, right?

Price follows fashion. Maybe in 10 years K-32s will be out of vogue again and available for no more than, say, a .38-44 Heavy Duty brings today. And Heavy Duty models may be the new RM. Who knows?

I picked the gun up on Friday. It is a Model 16 no dash. Over all it looks pretty good other than a scratch on the barrel. Here are some quick pics.

Beautiful gun. It should have a set of diamond Magna stocks, as the ones on the gun are from a later era.
