Hi All,

Just traded a 5946 for a Model 17-3. I always liked the 22 lr but this my 1st S&W revolver. Question on the date of manufacturing, the SN 5K885XX on the butt and on the swing out and 11271 A16. How long did they make them and any info would be helpful.

What grips can I replace them with and a good place to get them? Is it a K frame and other frame grips work? Would like some target grips. It has the small grips now with metal all around the square frame. Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks and Take Care, kx400

Sounds like a good trade (for you). The 5K number indicates it shipped in 1975; the other number is an internal factory code. The same basic model was made beginning in the 1930s through the late 1990s, and it is still available in the Classic series.

Any square butt K frame stock will fit. There are good threads here about stock IDs, and once you find the type you like you can look in the accessories sale section or post a Wanted to Buy ad. Hope this is helpful.

You can get a lot of help from the people up here about the stuff you need to know and you got a great revolver by the way. The correct grips are easy to get and can be bought either in the classifed section of the S&W forum and there is also a good selection of S&W grips on EBay.
