Model 17-3 One of a Kind

Here is a one of a kind 17-3. The gun has 3 barrels, an 8 3/8" with gold post front sight, and both 6" and 4" with red ramp front sights, all marked " 22 LONG RIFLE CTG." a white outline rear sight target hammer and trigger, and hand select Rosewood target grips, with a butt plate with the S&W logo on it. This was an ordered factory gun (through employee sales), and will letter as described. Truly an unique revolver.

That is nice. I wonder why the long tube has a different front sight?
Did it come with the tools to change the barrels? The grips are beautiful, never saw Rosewood like that.

I would like to see any one try to install the barrels if you are not a gun smith.It is not for any home repairs.The gun plate was not made by smith.It could have been made on the out side and put on.Could you tell us the name on the bottom of the letter.

To answer all questions, first the employee liked the gold post on the 8 3/8" barrel, Second the barrels are not a quick change, they were fitted when made, but are they are purely for show, however they could be switched out, but I would only have a competent gunsmith do it, and there is chance the frame could crack, as it takes more than a slight twist to remove the barrels, better left alone. Third, the employee this gun came from said there was a company in Mass that offered these butt caps, but I don't have the name. They used to make all kind of designs, including police badges and patches, and the butt caps were popular for a while, but the automatic craze hit, so I don't think they are still around.

I would guess that those are all Model 53 barrels with the correct roll stamp for the .22 long rifle.

Those are not standard Model 17 barrels. I would love to get my hands on a couple of those with the .22 long rifle stampings on them.

The barrels can be switched without any problems as long as the person doing it has the correct fitting frame and barrel wrenches, and understands what he is doing.

I agree with bdGreen. Those barrel have the enclosed ejector shroud, so they are most likely from a 53.

The grip cap looks like nothing more than a fancy police headknocker. The guy who got whacked in the forehead with that would have a nice tatoo.
