I acquired one of these at my local pawn shop without realizing they were only produced for two years. The serial number is BBD2772. Could anyone enlighten me as to production numbers and options available on this model?

-5 models began in 1988.

Discontinued in 1989 for the full-lug -6 model.

No clue on production numbers, sorry.

I have a -4 model with the 8-3/8" bbl. It always draws interest at the range.

Variations were 10-shot models, 16 were made in nickel finish, 36 were made with 7-1/2" barrels, 200 were made with SS cylinders & 6" full-lug barrels. 14 were made with SS cylinders & 4" barrels.

Standard options were the usual target trigger, hammer & sights. There were some square butt models made during your gun's era too, 4" bbl.

Hope this helps!

My 17-5 has a 5” Heavy Target barrel. I’ve heard that a 5” barrel on a Model 17 is quite scarce, so was wondering if all 17-5 models were produced with that barrel.

A 5” 17-5 would indeed be an oddball. Are you sure it is not a 6”? A 5” gun sounds like someone had a custom length made up by a gunsmith.

I stand corrected. Yes, it's actually a 6" barrel. I checked my measurement and realized I had read the tape to the frame instead of the end of the barrel ( cylinder ).

I have a 6-inch 17-5 with the “heavy barrel” and full length wide rib. I’m fond of it, more so than guns with the barrels found on earlier models, but of course it’s not finished as nicely. I haven’t had it out to shoot in quite a while. Must remedy that.
