here is a pic of mine......what kind of info do you need?

Hi - thanks for pic. Much appreciated. Exactly the same as mine except mine has been converted for metallic silhouette purposes and has been fitted with competition sights. It would be great if you could give me a bit of history on this 17-6 8-3/8" model. Alli can say it is great shooting gun and extremely accurate out to 100m, which is the maximum competitive distance according IMSSU rules, which we shoot in SA

It's hard to know what kind of information you are looking for. The 17-6 is a version of the Model 17 and the -6 engineering change added the full length barrel under lug and the new yoke retention system and the revision happened in 1990. In 1993 the 8 3/8 barrel was discontinued from the line up.

I have a 17-4 with 8 3/8 barrel and it shoots like a laser beam and maybe the most accurate S&W revolver I own. Most forum members would agree that S&W 22 revolvers are fantastic shooters and that can be verified by the large numbers bought by the members of this forum. I currently own 5 myself a K22, 17-4, 18-3, 18-4, and a 617.

Hi
Thanks for the very interesting info. It sure is a great gun and the fourth S&W that I have owned. I had no idea that it was manufactured as recently as 1990 and I am looking forward to some great competitive shooting with this piece. In South Africa, were I hail from, quality revolvers are difficult to find and with our new Fire Arms Control Act, it is practically a miracle if you end up having one licensed in your name. This country is definitely trying to go Gun Free and this is a great pity as there are many excellent competition shooters here who will suffer if this happens. At our shooting club, we are privileged to have the current metallic silhouette small bore hand gun world champion as a member.
