I am new to target shooting and to this forum. I've taken a few lessons using a Ruger 22/45. I have an opportunity to purchase a model 17 and would like to know what year they were manufacutered and a range in value. My description of their condition is from a very uniformed novice point of view. Both guns have been used, neither has a box.

Model 17-4 sn:22K5844 - The grip on this one is bigger by about 30% than on the 17-3. The finish is good - no wear.

Model 17-3 sn:6K73274 - Small grip and a bit of wear on the barrel. Owner says this is from having it in a holster.

Welcome to the forum! The model 17 is a great target revolver, and highly sought after by those 'in-the -know...'

To answer your specific questions, the 17-3 you reference was manufactured in 1975, and the 17-4, in 1977. Based on your limited description, and without the benefit of pictures, I'd say the value ranges from around $450, to around $600. Of course, this could be less if the condition is worse than the "little muzzle wear." And, if if the-4 is mint, it could possibly bring more than the $600. You'll get a lot of opinions on value, depending on who is looking to buy at a certain price, or sell for a certain price, they also vary by where you live. My values are based on what I've actually seen them go for... Having a matching box and documents would help increase value. In any case the 17s are hot sellers.

Generally speaking, the early 17s (pre model number examples; 4 and 5 screw guns...) are more desirable than the later ones. But, the -3s and -4s are, again, very sought after gun. Both of the models that you are looking at feature the desirable pinned barrel, and recessed cylinder chambers. If your grips are factory grips, the smaller grips are known as "Magna" grips, and the larger ones are called "Target" grips. The Magnas should have a serial number on the under-side of the grip. If the number matches your gun, they are original to your gun, and this is more desirable/increases the value...

There have been a bunch of threads related to your questions regarding the 17, so try the search function, or even Google it, and you'll get lots of information. Good luck with your search. BTW, between the two you mentioned, I'd go with the one that's in top condition... Good luck.
