Model 17 Question

What is the difference between a target hammer/trigger and the standard hammer / trigger on model 17s? Does one make the revolver a better shooter? Thanks for any help.

The exact dimensions escape me right now, but the "standard" trigger and hammer are about 1/3" wide.
The target ones are 1/2" wide + or -.
Years ago, I purchased 8-3/8" Models 14 and 17. I wanted them set up like my Model 29, so had the shop change out the stocks, hammers, and truggers for the target ones.
Later, when I found Models 15 and 18, I discovered that, personally, the smooth narrow trigger was (to me) nicer. The big hammers do make rapid SA shooting a bit quicker. Probably a holdover from years long past when revolvers were used in bullseye competition.

Doesn't make the revolver shoot one bit better, but per his own preferences and likes, it may help the shooter shoot better.

In my opinion (which is worth what it costs you) the wide Target trigger is very difficult to use in any double action shooting. The narrow standard trigger, with the serrations ground out and polished, (I know shame on me) makes the much better double action shooting trigger.

I agree with the last two posters about the narrow trigger, although I like the serrations.

The wide target trigger gives the feeling of a smoother trigger pull, but it is subjective and each shooter has their own preferences. The target trigger can be a safety issue when carried in a holster that incases the trigger guard; something to be very careful of as it may cause an accidental discharge.

I happen to like the target trigger and have them on two S&W revolvers.
