I have a Model 17-2, serial number K6589XX, and there are some markings in the yoke I am curious about. It is stamped as usual with the SN and model number and below those is the assembly number, 91466. Below that is the markings in question. There appears to be a K followed by a 2, then a bold V with something sticking up inside the V. Are these marks of any significance? My thought is they may be casting or forging marks?
I'm just curious since I don't recall seeing these in other posted photos on the forum.

Looks like a fitter's mark or an inspector's. I think most manufacturers of complex machinery that required fitting during the assembly process used marks like these to make sure previously-mated parts come back together after any step in the process that requires them to be separated prior to final assembly. I think gun people are the main folks who notice these things, given the way we go over our treasures with a fine tooth comb!

Any marks in the "yoke cut" other than the SN, Model, and assembly numbers are fitters and inspectors marks. Just like the assembly number these mean nothing outside of the factory. The fitter is the person who "put-up", S&W parlance, (assembled) the revolver.
