Model 17

Picked up a new 17-9 last week off GB. Very pleased with the fit and finish. One small booger on the front sight base that no one will notice. Hit the range today and ran 100 rounds through it. CCI SV got a little sticky towards the end. Exceeds my skill level for accuracy. Pairs nicely with my M19.

Very nice Model 17s above. Wax lubed bullets will gum up the chambers pretty fast. I save those for my match rifles and use the copper washed rim fire ammo in the Model 17.

Here's my 17-3. It's laser accurate and just a hoot to shoot.

When you say "sticky", I presume that there is some difficulty inserting new rounds and/or extracting spent casings. When I go to the range with my Model 17, I take a .22 brush & rod. When I begin to experience the aforementioned problems I merely dry-brush the chambers and bore. This cures the problem.

tbob, that Model 17 is a fine point of entry, both to this forum and to shooting S&W revolvers in general. Not only will the K framed 22 provide hours of shooting pleasure on its own, but it will tend to improve your performance with the Model 19 to a surprising degree. Many folks choose the 22 K frame specifically as a practice gun or “understudy” for its “big brother.”

You have found its “Achilles heel” though... it doesn’t like to be dirty. If you keep it scrupulously clean and use clean ammo in it, your problems will be minimized. I have to clean my K22 a lot more often than my K32 or K38. But that’s a fair price for all the fun it gives.
