Model 18-2 value?

Purchased a S&W model 18-2 for $450 a couple months ago at a pawn shop. Absolutely beautiful revolver in near mint condition. It does have rubber grips that I would assume are aftermarket.

A guy I work with says it's worth at least double what I paid for it.
I've tried to find information on it. I found a thread on this site from about 10 years ago saying it was worth about between $500-$800 depending on condition.

What are these things going for now? I don't plan on selling, as my wife has essentially taken it LOL

Your workmate is correct. If the revolver is in the condition you stated, you paid about half price for it. Good for you!

Congratulations on a very good buy. Yet, even greater congratulations on having a wife with such excellent taste in revolvers!

Also, you may find the rubber grips would like to be supplemented by prettier shoes for display - or possibly even for shooting (depending on the exact era of the 28-2). If so, you could find attractive original type wood grips/stocks to supplement the aftermarket. Hint, you might want to check with your wife before making any rash decisions!

Great deal on that M18, and it's a great gun, too!

That said, for the life of me, I can't understand how guys run into these great deals at pawn shops...! Not once, not ever, have I seen a good deal on a gun at a pawn shop. And I'm talking about over 20 years of looking, in numerous states/cities. Guns I see are usually overpriced/way overpriced, often in poor condition, and begging for price negotiation that doesn't go too far. I've run into a deal or two at a gun shop, but never a pawn shop. Maybe some day... OP, again congratulations!

The Model 18 is my favorite revolver. Lots of fun and the perfect gun to polish your DA shooting skills with.
I've seen nice ones sell for $1000 or more. You got an outstanding deal. Congratulations!

Yeah, near mint at that price is a steal in my opinion. Now you can afford period correct stocks if you choose. Mine is a 18-4 that other than an initial shooting after i bought it, had become a safe queen. But I couldn't stand it any longer and it's in rotation for plinking pleasure

There's actually a 18-4 on GB right now with SN only about 250 from mine! And it's minty too.

When I saw the title, I got to thinking about the Value of a K Frame that shoots inexpensive .22 ammo. I take either that or my 22/32 Kit Gun J Frame to the range every time I go, just to wind down the range session and concentrate on the basics without much recoil. So the value of the revolver is what it will do for your overall shooting! As for the money, yeah, you stole it...but the value is hard to put a price on.

FWIW, there's a pristine 4" 18-3 (gun only) at a LGS in Pahrump, NV, for $929 firm. He's had it for a several months and still won't budge.
