I recently picked up a Model 19-2 2 & 1/2 inch barrel and it has a yellow front sight insert. Is this a factory option or did someone change it since it left the factory? It was made in 1966.
In the late 1970’s a friend on another department was sent to S&W armorers school at the factory. While there he had a yellow ramp installed on his department issue model 15.
An easy way to find out about a gun you intend to keep would be to join the SWCA and SWHF and send of a letter request to our historian. Love the 2.5 K frames. I have them in all colors. Enjoy yours.
I once owned a 3” Model 13 that had a yellow insert in the front sight. I often wondered, like you, if it was a factory installation. It looked factory and was very easy to see.
There have been kits sold for years with multiple colors that allow you to make your own insert. It's cheap and easy enough that a color insert is just not anything to get worked up over (like it's something "special.") Literally anyone who can use a file properly can do it. (Heck, even if they can do it almost properly!)
No, The previous owner is a friend of mine and is suffering from alzhiemers and dementia, His wife thinks the original grips are somewhere in a box stored away, She did say if she finds them she will call so I can come and get them. I did get the unopened cleaning kit and SAT for it.
Purchased a new 19 back in 78. It was a snubby like yours. Came with wood grips with the rounded butt configuration. Front sight contained no colored insert. Think you did well on the price for sure. Mine cost $180 back then. Unfortunately I no longer own it.
