Hi all,

New member here. I'm very interested in the Model 19-3. I found this at a local gun shop. It is on consignment for $750. Based on these photos, do you think this is worth the $750? I am relatively new to appreciating the good old fashioned blued wheel guns. Thanks in advance.

More pics to come.

Keep Looking

In my opinion even with the associated cost for buying online that is where you should start. At the very least you can get a feel for the market and are not committed to making a decision after looking at one or two M19's. You did visit the right venue to start learning all the basics for purchasing the very sought after M19 especially the pinned and recessed model you are submitting. I have been looking for months on Gun Broker (GB) for a model 19-1 thru 3 right in the price range you are asking about and in my opinion if you just factor the rust on that gun it wouldn't be on my list. That abuse is indicative of other issues you will most likely find. Remember "rust never sleeps" You can do better period, much. You will find pricing to have a regional factor so even if you loose the benefit of handling a gun and having a up close and personal experience in a face to face situation you are still only looking at one option where on a site like GB in spite of associated cost that will run $50-$70 the key is to find a reputable dealer with top of the line feedback. You will then open the door to maybe being able to compare 20 different firearms of varying prices in your range until you come across one that feels just right. If you don't like the auction experience there is GunsInternational that features fixed prices. There is a 98% S&W M19-5 4" barrel from a very reputable seller priced at $750 (maybe a little high) with rubber grips and no box or paperwork but if you want a first class shooter, go to GI and enter item #100517453.You can also just open the S&W revolver section and look at all the 19"s they have. Another option is to go to a model 66 the stainless steel version of the M19, they are more plentiful thus cheaper and you won't find a smoother double/single action, well maybe the M19. I own three M66, here is a no dash pinned and recessed I found on GB for $480, remember same gun as that rust bucket M19 you were looking at but in a easier to maintain the finish and repair scratches and dings.
One final comment before you nod off, anything about anything, or question regarding S&W revolvers has already been asked and answered by very knowledgeable group of folks that are caring and very generous with their time. In spite of the option to ask on a new thread go to the top right corner under SEARCH and enter your question in the GOOGLE search option and 9 out 10 times you will find everything you need and more. Buying locally is always best but unless it's the perfect deal to fit your needs and wallet can be limiting. Here's the M66 I spoke of. Good Luck
SMITH & WESSON MODEL 19-5 .357 MAGNUM REVOLVER GI#: 100247613
This is the comparison I wanted you to make. I know it is not a dash 3

Rust, missing stock, poor finish, borderline abuse. Maybe $300. Having said that, if someone with a lot of enthusiasm comes along who knows? I wouldn't look twice at that gun.

I agree, that is not a $750 gun. A MUCH nicer 19-3 in good condition with original box sold in the classified section of this forum just today for under $700. It did sell quickly! It's all about condition!

Wow! Thanks, raylan007, and others! Thanks so much for your honest opinions. I knew I came to the right place to post these pics and seek assistance! :)

I forgot to mention earlier that this gun includes the Pachmyr grips that are shown here but also the original wood grips and a holster. It does not, however, come with a box or paperwork. In addition, per the local gun shop, this revolver has been there since approximately December 2014.

raylan007: a buddy of mine has an M66, 6" barrel. I like it but I prefer the blued finish of the Model 19 or even the larger 586.

I have looked at prices for these guns on Gun Broker and Guns America, Guns International, etc. but am still a little bit wary of buying a gun online sight unseen. Like I said, I'm fairly new to firearms though I do have a growing collection. Thanks again raylan007 for the tips and suggestions on what to look for from the online dealers with good reputations.

So, would you say that it's not even worth offering the seller of this gun on consignment a lower bid of say $550? What would you say this gun is worth?

Thanks again, y'all! :)

In one word, No.

I have learned the hard way that buying a beat up gun doesn't improve the gun's condition. :o
I bought an abused 586 about three years ago. I talked myself into believing it wasn't as bad as it looked. After two trips back to the factory (and doubling the money I paid for it), now it's a nice gun.
It was a rookie mistake. Live and learn.

This is one I'd walk away from, and don't look back. It looks abused and neglected.
I mean honestly..... How does the rear sight blade get rusty?

You can get a really nice Model 19 for at least $100 less.
I traded into mine, and if I remember right the guy valued it around $575.00.

P.S.
Welcome to the forum.

I paid $600.00 for a -3 with target hammer and trigger, in much better condition a couple of days ago. It didn't have the original grips, but it did have a nice set of S&W Magna's on it.

Around here most any 19 will be tagged in the $500-550.00 range, even if it's been dragged behind a truck. They normally sell in a couple of days. I paid $500.00 for a "finish challenged" four screw "no dash" 19 with diamond targets, not too long ago. I cleaned it up with Flitz and made it presentable and it shoots just fine.

But $750.00 is getting on up where I expect to see them unfired in the box with papers range. If they're asking that much for the OP's gun, I doubt they'd entertain an offer as low as $500-550.00. They're probably into too deep themselves.
