About 35 years ago I traded off an early 4 inch model 19 and have regretted it ever since. The other day I found a 2 1/2 inch model 19-3 with target stocks in a local gun store for $325. It looked to be in excellant shape so I put some cash down. I have not picked up the gun yet, but have some questions for someone more knowledgable than myself. The gun has a slight amount of space between the barrel shroud and the frame(just enough to see light through)is this common? And are target stocks common on 2 1/2 inch barrel models?

I agree with Joe on both counts, though I never quite understood why anyone would want target stocks on a 2-1/2" barreled gun.

by barrel shroud,if your talking about the lower part of the barrel that actually covers the ejector rod..yes thats common..there is a slight gap
target stocks on a 2-1/2 inch not common and might not be correct.they should probally be standard magna grips
however. the price 325.00 also is not too common.actually a good deal for my area. i'd grab it. strip off the targets. look either for a set of magnas or combats for it..

With all these good answers are you back with it yet? Plus I don't see any Pictures

Yes, that would be pretty much the
going price if it was still
"2006".

I have one of the duplicates of
yours. It is just a joy to shoot,
and is very accurate.

As far as regrets about selling,,,
well, this one will make up for it
a bit.

How would target stocks fit on a 2 1/2" model 19, since it has a ROUND BUTT? Perhaps someone rebarreled a 4" or 6" gun and put a 2 1/2" barrel on a square butt frame. Unless it is wearing the "banana" style round butt target stocks, which are very uncommon.

Square butt target stocks will fit on the gun. They cover the front grip strap. There will be an area on the bottom of the backstrap where the wood and metal don't meet, as the strap curves back in while the square butt stocks' inletting doesn't.

I saw a surprising number of coworkers who put square butt targets on their round butt 2-1/2 inch M-19's and 66's when they left detective assignments and went back to uniform jobs and didn't want to buy a new 4 inch gun.

I picked up the 19-3 yesterday, and got to shoot it today, what a great shooter. I got the rest of the story from the guy that took it in on trade.

The gun was owned by a local police officer and was traded off by his son after his death. According to the son the gun was either a special order or was sent back to S&W to be rebarreled because he can remember his father waiting for the gun to arive. Who knows, It sure is a great piece and nearly new.
Can anyone provide more info, the serial # is 7K93070 ? Help would be greatly appreciated, it is a unique gun with the full target stocks on a 2 1/2" barreled gun.

Looks like 1975 according to the SCSW...same as my 19-3. I have a pair of black washer RB magnas if you need them for the 19-3.

Happy New Year,
Bimmer

Even though targets may seem out of place on a short-barreled revolver, if a man has medium to large hands and concealability is not an issue, they may be just about perfect.

I would shoot it and see how I like it as-is before changing anything.
Of course, if you are concerned about originality and correctness, then by all means suit yourself.
