Model 19 Rear Sight

I have a Model 19 with a 4" barrel. My bore sight says I'm still low with the rear sight up as high as it will go. Is this normal? Is there a taller sight blade available?

In my experience, bore sight results don't mean much. You'll have to send some a projectiles down the barrel to see if, or how much it's off in terms of elevation.

The model 19 was fit with a .146" blade. (there are taller blades available, if needed)

Bore sighting is intended to “get you on the paper”, final sight adjustment requires some range time.

It also makes a really big difference what bullet weight and velocity load you are using.

You can call Smith & Wesson and order the kit for $11, with or without the white outline

The sight blade kits are very hard to find the way the current Factory website is set up.

I had a Model 14 (8-3/8") that shot great with 148-grain wadcutter target loads but way too low with the 110-grain jacketed hollow-points I wanted to use for varmint hunting. A higher rear sight blade took care of the problem while still allowing enough adjustment for the wadcutters.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I understand about bore scopes, and I've used them successfully to get me on the paper. Gun shoots low, so I got the bore scope out as a check. With the sight elevated to the max, I'm an inch and a half low at about ten feet. I rotated the scope 180 degrees to see if the scope was off center, and got the same result. Gun was acquired used, and dont know the history, so I'm thinking maybe it got changed at some point. Regarding the .146" blade mentioned above, does anyone know how its measured? Centerline of screw hole to bottom of notch, maybe?

Measure the side of the blade leaf itself for the height. If the blade isn't damaged, I would shoot it before spending the money on a rear sight kit.

Found a pic on ebay. looks like its the height of flat part measured on the edge. just measured mine, its about 9/64, which is real close to .146.

If you venture into the rear sight disassembly do it in a bag as the tiny plunger and spring are very unforgiving as they sail across the room into oblivion.

Don't buy just a blade, it takes a screw and nut also. You have to "break" the old screw to remove it. Be very cautious removing the screw, as the detente & spring can come flying out and go to where no one can find them. Do it in a large clear plastic bag.

I do not believe that Smith & Wesson sells just the rear sight blade

The Kit that I mentioned above can be bought straight from the Factory and it includes everything in the picture . . . New blade, new screw and new nut for $11

As a S&W armorer I purchased each part individually as officers are hard on adjustable rear sights bending or breaking them. Found one officer with the entire sight assembly missing when he came to the range, he had never missed it?
