I recently ran across a 4" model 19 in a local gun store. It had a bead blast finish and almost appeared to be parkerized. My first impression was that it had been refinished to cover up some imperfections but after holding it in my hand the finish looked as if it may have have been original to this revolver. Additionally it had four letters stamped into the frame (an agency mark for sure) that appeared to have been done by S&W when it was manufactured. I did not record the letters so can not post them here. My question is did Smith & Wesson ever put a finish like that on any revolvers as a special order from a particular agency? I have never seen any like this. It was a pinned and recessed gun and I'd have purchased it but the price was north of $500.00 and I had fears that it may have been "BUBBAED". Should I go back and buy it anyway? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

S&W did make a 4" in matte finish but it was only the 4" RB 19-7's made for the DSS.

Since you say it is P&R, I suspect it is refinished but it is difficult to make a guess with the information provided.

Back in the day, S&W would accommodate an agency that was placing a large enough order. That's my understanding, anyways.

But the finish you describe really sounds "unique" to say the least. Unless I had solid proof to the contrary, I would assume it is a refinish, and only pay a refinished shooter price.
