Local gun store has 2 old smiths. First is a pre model 10 with numbers matching grips. Second is a 1905 second change (I think) in 32 Winchester. Am I correct?

They are asking $450 for the model 10 and $700 for the 1905. I can probably work them a little bit on price. What are these worth?

Hey Pontiac
What you referred to as a "pre model 10" is actually a postwar .38 Military & Police revolver that still has the long action. This example probably shipped in October or November, 1946. I show a lot of 5" barrel examples around this serial number.
This one is in pretty decent shape and I think $450 is a fair price. If you get this, you will be pleased with how well it shoots. In my opinion, these are nicer shooting guns than any "pre-model 10" or Model 10, because of the smooth, long action. You will also like the 5" barrel. I prefer mine to all the 4" fixed sight guns I own.
Regards,
JP

I don't think so. With that serial number, I would expect the third changes, but as you probably know, this isn't an exact science. You'd need to pull the sideplate to be sure.
Given the serial number, the cartridge designation and the stocks, I would tend to date this one at about 1911 or 1912. It looks pretty nice and those stocks are lovely.
I'm wondering a bit about the finish, though. The forward two side plate screws appear to be pretty deeply set and the monogram seems to be somewhat washed out. Perhaps it is just the photos. But I think you should look at this finish very carefully.
As for the price, it seems a bit high to me. But, assuming the finish is original, this is a nice old .32-20 Hand Ejector with the longest barrel available at the time. I might be tempted to go $600 on it if I were dickering over it. I probably would not spend $700 on it. Now, if it had target sights . . .
