I paid $840 for an early one like that, but with more finish wear, a few years ago. $800 is a great price.

Mine was an interesting piece of history but, with its very heavy trigger pull, not a fun range gun.

I don't know how you managed to find this for $840. I've been looking for one that is early with the concentric grooves and recessed concave stocks with condition and bids twice that amount leave me outbid.

Also check the cylinder chambers. Several years ago I checked a very nice 1917 at a gun shop. The chambers were absolutely cratered! It reminded me of termite eaten wood!

Check the barrel for corrosion if you want to shoot it and have any accuracy. Lots of early 45acp ammo was corrosive. Otherwise it looks like a dandy to me.
Some of the best shooting i have ever done with a 1917 pattern S&W was a 1937 Brazilian and it's bore condition was horrid. A service history combining the use of corrosive ammunition and likely little maintenance. In any event, rifling is typically quite shallow in 1917s.
