Model 2, variation 2?

I found a S&W top break revolver. It has a 3 1/4" barrel, five shot cylinder and appears to be in .38 S&W. By its condition it has seen better days. S/N: 71812. It is single action and the cylinder rotates until cocked, then it locks up. The info I have provided is what I have found here on the forum and the net. This is new to me and I could be wrong; any info would be appreciated. See pics. Interesting revolver that has seen a lot for an 1880 black powder pistol. art

The condition is better than average as far as I can tell. Maybe refinished, but overall in decent shape. In my opinion, this model is properly identified as a 38 Single Action, 2nd Model so as not to confuse it with the original Model 2 32 Rimfire tip-up revolver. The Model 2 was a popular Civil War era revolver. Your gun would have shipped in the mid to late 1880s.
