Just purchased a Lew Horton 24-3 with a set of original combats.
This is a one owner gun with all the stuff, even the holster which was an option.
Anyway, my question is the Grips are marked 120 with a marker.
This number does not relate to any of the number of the gun.
Any ideas, could they be orig. to the gun?

Call Lew Horton and request a letter and they can verify it is one of theirs. If so they should be original to the gun. Here are my two Hortons 24 and 624 keeping the 29 company.

If I were to guess, if you bought from the original owner and all the other goodies were there, then there would have been no reason for a grip swap. I doubt the number written inside the grip means anything. Pics would be great.
Here's my 3" 24-3 Lew Horton gun made in the same time frame as yours and the letter from Earl Minot.

The 24-3 Lew Horton I have is numbered on the stocks also, I received it unfired with all the accessories including holster.

I picked up a really, really nice Lew Horton 3" 624 a few weeks ago, with box and combats. Got it for only $600, best deal I've gotten in a long time. Spec Ord date on box is July 15, 1985. Received the confirmation from Earl Minot at Lew Horton that it was one of theirs. I had planned to sell the 624 on for a profit, but I like it so much I'm keeping it.

This thread made me curious, so I just pulled the combats off to see if they have a number. They do, "925" in magic marker.

Had to laugh yesterday. A shop here in Charlotte, NC has a used 624 3" with combats (no box or docs) for $2200 retail. The guy behind the counter said that it was 1 of 500 by Lew Horton and then went on to tell me how it was chambered in 44 Magnum (not Spl.) and how the Lew Horton guns all came with special springs and internal parts. I tried to explain the production numbers (1 of 5000) and how Lew Horton Distributors worked...even showed him the Standard Catalog of S&W entry on my phone. (Yes, have it stored on my phone :) ) He insisted that the Catalog was wrong, etc. So, I let it go. Not going to argue with the guy. Especially with no plan to buy the revolver at that price. But, I'll say that it is a sharp looking gun with that barrel length and combo of stainless and combat grips.

Gun is in nice shape. Also came with the original Lew Horton holster. I spoke with Earl and he confirmed that the gun is a Lew Horton.
The blue is a little milky in a few spots and I am not sure how to clean up.
Also the grips are a loose. I tightened the screw but still a bit loose. How do can I fix?

Spectacular deal! Congrats!
I'm still on the hunt for one.

Blued 3" N frame 44s might be my favorite S&W revolvers. I only have one for now, a 29-3 Lew Horton overrun. Nice score!

Shim inside of grips with electrical tape as needed for looseness.

24-3 Lew Horton - Yes Sir!!

Congratulations on a great 44 special snub!:D

Here's my 24-3 which was stored by the original owner in the box, (with original receipt, tools, papers, etc.) after maybe less than a box through it. As you can see the original grips are numbered also, and I suspect (don't know) that those numbers are more to keep the matching pair together with selected revolver, prior to shipping from Smith.

I stored all of the original grips and put Culinas on my 24-3 LH, 624 LH, & 625-6 LH, as they are more comfortable for shooting, and to me, more appealing.

This whole thread got my curiosity flowing so I called Lew Horton today and asked about the numbered stocks.
The gentleman there told me that the numbers on the stocks were place there by S&W and not them.
I figured I might as well have them send me a letter for mine because it would serve the same purpose as a letter from S&W which would say it was shipped to Lew Horton and it cost less.
