Model 24-3 question

Hello all! This is one of my first questions since joining the forum! I already have learned so much from all of the knowledgeable folks here!

My question concerns grip styles of the 24-3...is the goncalo alves target style grip the only grip that came standard on the 24-3? I seen a nice 24-3 in a gunshop recently but it had the smaller style grip (sorry I dont know the name of that grip) I am hesitant on purchasing that gun for my collection because of the possibility of a non-standard grip...any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

The 24-3 came with the GA target stocks as standard, but don't pass up a nice 24-3 just because it has magnas on it. You can find the standard target stocks fairly easily. Some came with the football relief and some had the full speed loader cutout. I have seen them both ways in original condition. The magnas look good on a 4" gun, but look too small on the 6 1/2" gun in my opinion.

These are smooth presentation stocks on my 24-3, and they have the football relief (the area just below the thumb latch)-

These are magnas on a K frame, but they are identical to those for the N frame.

If that 24-3 is in good/great condition for the price, I'd grab it regardless of the grips. Grips are easy to find; a nice 24-3 is not - at least for a reasonable price.

There were three 24-3 barrel lengths, 3", 4" and 6 1/2". The 4" and 6 1/2 " had target grips like Gun 4 Fun posted. The 3" had combat finger groove grips like this on my 624-3:

That is probably the sexiest revolver S&W ever made, IMHO.

The only thing that comes close is a 3.5" Registered Magnum...still my Holiest of Holy Grails.

There's nothing more gorgeous than deep, rich, glossy blue steel, but for carry purposes, I much prefer the durability of stainless.

If I ever get the J frame bug outta my system, I'm gonna trade two Jays for a 3 inch 624.

Wow! Exactly the information I was looking for. Thanks guys! The gun that I'm looking at is in very good condition I think. I'm not real versed on knowing the different conditions but this one in my opinion is about 95% with only a scuff at the muzzle on the right side which looks like it came from sitting in the box. Speaking of the box it is also in perfect condition with all the tools inside in unused condition.
Another plus is in addition to the wood Magna stock it also has a white Magna stock which looks to be made of micarta or something similar. This stock also has the S&W medallion. Could this be a original S&W Magna stock? Also it is a 6 1/2 in barrel...I'm not good with values either but the asking price is $700.00 It may be high but it is a beautiful 24-3 that would look nice in my collection...

Thedane, is your 24-3 a Lew Horton special? I have a chance at one of those too...beautiful gun!

This forum is going to cost me money from seeing all these pics!!

Ok, thanks Dan....I have a chance at one for $800.00 dont know if thats a good price or not...

Oh and I forgot to add in my earlier post...where would I find a source for the GA Target stock?

You can find the target stocks quite often right here in our own classifieds, but you should know what to look for and what current prices are. I keep seeing guys who are trying to get the prices that these stocks were getting at the height of the obama scare. They have come down since then to more realistic levels, and generaly run around $50 to $75 for a decent set.
