Due to some trading around I have aquired a NIB model 242. I have found out that this 7-shot, .38spl titanium, DAO was only made in 1990. I got it with the intention of carrying it but the more I think about it, I can't bring myself to fire it:confused: so I sat about and decided to trade it to a collector type. for a more usable revolver. My question is how much is reasonable to ask? What says the experts and if anyone is interested let me know.

Hell, I'll give you $450 for it right now!

I've been seeing them on Gunbroker priced similarly to 296's - in the $600-$750 range, some higher. I don't know if they're actually selling for those prices, I haven't been paying that much attention. There's one on there now with a "Buy Now" price of $1600!!!! They're hard to find guns but I don't that happening for him.

In NIB condition, a Model 242 should easily get $700+. I sold mine not long ago for about $750 (including shipping, as I recall). I've actually seen one fetch well over $1000 on GunBroker, but that was an unusually high price.

The 242 and 296 were introduced at the 1999 SHOT Show - and available soon after. The 242 was made until 2000, the 296 until the end of 2001. I bought a new 296 nearly seven years ago when they were on closeout for $349. It would take a lot more to remove it from my collection. It shares CCW duties with a 642 - ie, it has a use here.

I wanted a 242 for a while, but finally came to the realization that if I was going to tote it for protection, I'd rather carry fewer .44 Specials. If I carry .38 Specials, a 642 makes more sense to me. As I am not a 'collector', rather a 'user', the only one I ever saw, a no-box in fair shape, for $349 didn't tempt me. He still had it that Sunday afternoon, too. Another negative - to me - the Ti cylinder - too hard to clean and care for. One Ti cylinder in my 'collection' is enough.

Now, if you were to find a collector - you should start at $450+!

In my area around 600.00 seems fair.I think David Carrol had one advertised.

I bought one after I had been carring my Smith 296 for a while, it was a shooter grade and is excellent to shoot and carry. I have it in my pocket right now as I type.
