Not sure if this is in the right forum or not:

I am interested in getting a Model 25 in Colt .45 with a 4" or 6" barrel.

What should a fella be looking out for when buying one?

I guess there are different throat diameters with the guns? Anything else?

What years / Models would you look for?

Thanks much,

rudyc

I am a bit of a 25 nut. I own several, and have studied up on them quite a bit. The above link is a good one. The thing to look for to make a determination quickly is the three letter, four number serial number. These all have the correct throats in them, and they will usually run .452-.453". The older pinned guns will usually run .456"- .458" and will take quite a bit of experimenting with soft cast slugs to get to shoot decently. I have seen several posts here that say the old guns shoot just fine, but I guess that all depends on what you consider fine. I don't think 5-8" groups at 25 yards are acceptable. If you are only concerned about shooting at 25-50feet, then I guess then maybe that kind of accuracy is ok. I like them a little more precise than that though.

If you can find a 25-7, buy it! They are quite accurate, and balance, oh so nicely, with that 5" barrel. I don't plan on ever letting mine go

I had a 25-5 that I bought off someone on this forum. The guy was having a hard time selling it because he had the troats reamed and the forcing cone recut and no one wanted it.

I bought it. It was the most accurate S&W I've ever owned, and I'm not a fan of the .45 Colt.

Unfortunately I sold it last year. Still have a 625-9 Mtn Gun in .45 Colt but in my opinion it's a shotgun. I'll work with it a little more but I don't think it's an accurate gun.

Thanks for the article Happy Hunter. It answered a lot of my questions. 45 Colt is becoming my favorite due to the available SaW and Rugers available. Looking forward to testing my 625 MG this summer.
