Went to a gun show today in Ohio. Saw a beautiful blued 27-2 3 1/2". Had the blue box, target grips, didn't see any marks, not even cylinder marks! Had a 4" a long time ago and would like to replace it. He was asking $1,500, which I thought was kind of high, but I don't know the market. Didn't want to make an emotional buy and pay too much. I can wait. I don't mind paying a little more for the ability to check it out in person.what is a decent price? I may go back tomorrow if the price is right. Thanks in advance.

I'd offer 1200. and see where it goes, at 1500 it is a little high, but they don't really float around much in that condition, wood box or blue box, and if blue, serial # to gun??

You rarely see them around here and when you do it truly is above the market (like about 2k). That may be on the high end, but the 3.5 is in demand and if it is truly brand new-ish it may be par. I would swing if I were you.

I don't think that price is too bad. You may find one for less. Or you may end up wishing you bought that one. Do you remember the last time you saw one for sale in that condition? Especially in person? Not on the internet? I already have a 3&1/2". But if I was looking for one, I think I would try to get the price down a little. But if he would not bargain, I would buy it anyway.

Well, as has been pointed out, there are a few questions to ask yourself: can I afford it? Do I really want it? How many have I ever seen just like this, and in this condition? ...... I just happened to walk into a local gun show a few years (2 or 3) ago, and a guy had just put a 3 1/2" 27-2 in the wooden presentation case, with papers and tools on his table with an asking price of $650. I suppose that I should have spent time inspecting it, and trying to bargain with him, etc., but I had my wallet out before anyone else had a chance to even ask to see it!!! I still have it, and although it may not be as pristine as yours, it is in pretty impressive condition. And I shoot it and it is a good gun to shoot, and like my Highway Patrolmen, the weight of the big N frame makes shooting even full magnums pretty enjoyable.

Here is what it looked like back then (papers are under the lid lining):

By the way, is the box numbered to the gun? The 27-2s were made during a time when the presentation case would be appropriate for some numbers, and was phased out for others, which then came in a box. I'm sure no expert on this stuff, but you might want to do a little research, since it is a rather high dollar aquision. This gun shipped in August 1979.

Of course I know that that was an incredible buy, even a few years ago, but the point is that I have never regretted the buy.

Today, I have a set of ivory magnas and a Tyler T grip mounted, as I prefer the feel of this combination, of course I still have the original target stocks, in case I would ever want to sell. Which is very unlikely...this is one of my most treasured handguns.

Best Regards, Les

What do you want to do with the gun? Use it for a shooter? $1500?
way too much for a shooter. As soon as you put a little wear on it the
value will go way down. It needs a lot more than a blue box to be really
collectable. Are you even sure the box is original to that gun? It's
just too high period.

27-2's w/ target stocks were delivered in the wooden presentation case mid/late '70's IIRC, w/ the blue box instead you would've found it dressed w/ matching #'d magmas (I would suspect this is an early "N", serial # would tell us-- if it's an "S", drop everything and go get it).

I looked for a long time before paying $1050 a couple years ago (I was VERY happy) for an insanely highly polished 97%/98% 1968 27-2 3.5" "S" that not only had no box, but wore a set of throwaway laminated stocks to boot. This was a couple weeks after watching another nearly identical beauty (98%/99%)-- again w/ no box, but in this case wearing the proper matching #'d magmas-- sell for $2300. The box and stocks are everything in pricing these high-condition beasts.

Having said all that I think the gun as you describe it, assuming the box is #'d correctly, is certainly fairly priced. And as someone said earlier-- even if it was off a tad, how long will it take you to find another? Besides-- $1500 is the ASKING price.

--I should add that the difference in condition between my 97%/98% 27-2 and the 98% perhaps 99% of the $2300 gun is very significant as well

As an FYI...... if you are looking for a shooter:

I found a 4" 27-2 in September........the 3 1/2 inch are the hot/popular barrel length while 4 inch are fairly uncommon (80-92 only).....

I rated the gun at between 90-95%..... and felt it had been someone's well cared for duty gun in the 1980s.

I got it for $600 out the door that's$560 pre tax.....

If you want a safe queen $1500 seems a bit high IMHO; I'd offer $1200..... if you want it to shoot and carry ....... you could save yourself $400-500 with a "nice but used" 27 or 28

Great to hear. He had a really nice selection of guns. From all the info and research it seems $1,200 give or take, would be a fair price. I'm buying to shoot it, but I'm pretty anal about my guns so a "shooter queen" is what I'm looking for. Thanks everyone. And Brown's fan, Go Browns?

MSRP of the new ones a few years ago was in the neighborhood of $1500. They were not as nice as has been described here, with the top checkering being weakly done. Just sayin!
