Model 27-2 broken hammer nose

A buddy asked me to fix his very rough M27-2 which was missing the hammer nose.

I ordered the parts, installed, cleaned the gun and when doing function checks, I may have noticed what caused the first hammer nose to break.

I noticed the hammer rides on the right side of the internal opening between the frame and side plate.

I dry snapped and everything felt fine.

I was thumbing the hammer back and forth while holding the trigger back to feel the hammers track and notice toward the end of its travel...

there is a hitch and the hammer kicks over to the right and the hammer nose falls in the firing pin bushing.

there must be enough play in the hammer hole to frame pin fit to cause the hammer to sit not square.

would the fix be to square up the hammer with Power Custom washers?

Hammer axle washers are the fix only if excessive sideplay is the problem. First you have to determine that the hammer axle is not loose or sheared. If loose, it can be restaked in place. If it is bent or worse, sheared, replacement is the only option. Does the hammer show sign of impact damage from dropping?

thanks for the response.

this gun hardly shows wear of firing but something happened to it (a drop) as the front sight is dinged up heavily.

the rear sight or hammer does not show any signs of dropping or abuse.

he let the internals get a little surface rust, but when I stoned off the surface rust (he got a butt chewing!)

the action is somewhat smooth with no cylinder installed and then off course its gets heavier with the heavy cylinder installed.

the hammer axle is not loose or appears bent. the side plate installs somewhat easier than most side plates that I have messed with.

I will do some other checks and report back later.

ADDED:
I examined closely and complete tore it down again and I cannot find anything noteably wrong with it.

for some reason, the hammer likes to hug the sideplate side and there is consirable play on hammer axle on the frame to hammer axle hole with nothing attached but just the hammer on the frame.

the raised area on the side plate which I would call a bearing surface for the hammer does seem flat to me or near level with the surface of the sideplate inner surface.

it is rough or sharp edges indicating it has never been altered or stoned.

it is unk why the hammer nose was missing, rivet and all. it could have very well been installed incorrectly from day one and just fell out and the hammer track contact prior to the firing pin nose coming through the bushing may be normal contact.
