Model 27-2 problem solved (But how?)

So my new to me 1978 Model 27-2 had an intermittent problem that I have somehow fixed. Every once in a while the cylinder stop would slip of the the trigger and pop back up too early and jamb the gun. Letting off the trigger reset things and it functioned fine until it did it again. This was happening once every 50 or so trigger pulls.

I took the side plate off and sprayed some break free CLP in the internals and cleaned everything up and put it back together. This helped some. But it still did it once or twice every 100 trigger pulls.

I then took everything completely apart, cleaned everything and put it back together. When taking it apart I noticed that the previous owner had backed the strain screw off about 1 1/2 to 2 turns. When I put it back together I tightened the strain screw down all the way. After doing this, I can't make it malfunction. Everything works flawless. The trigger has a heavier pull but it is smoother than before.

So was it the cleaning, or was it the strain screw?

Maybe a little of both. Either way..fixed is fixed.

One of my K-frames was doing that. I was going to take the side plate off to check out the internals, but as soon as I got the grips off, I noticed the strain had backed out some. After I tightened it all was fine.

Thanks, that at least gives some credence to it might have been the screw. I was leaning towards that to begin with.

I do believe, all the above. The strain screw was fit to that revolver and meant to be tight. Also, you'll be surprised what a good complete cleaning will do. Anytime I pick up a used revolver, the first thing I do when I get it home is tear it completely down and give everything a good cleaning. Most people rarely remove the side plate and give the lock works a good cleaning. I don't believe I've brought one home yet that didn't have crud in the lock works.
