Greetings and a question for the collective mind.
I have a Model 27-2 six inch bearing serial number N1632xx that I am trying to find the date of manufacture.
When I received it (used) the revolver has a set of smooth S&W target grips and most oddly the target hammer and smooth target hammer have been jeweled on the sides. Is anyone aware if jeweling (engine turning) the sides of the hammer and trigger might be part of an S&W custom shop job?
Mostly I am interested in the manufacture date.
Thanks to all for your time.

Your 27-2 most likely shipped in 1974. Jeweling of the hammer and trigger were not offered by S&W, but were done outside of the factory. The smooth target stocks, target hammer and smooth target trigger are probably replacements for the originals.

I just bought my second Model 27 today. The first is a newer version, I bought new. That's a 27-9. The one I purchased today is a 27-2 , mfg in 1977.
I'm pretty excited! I'm really super interested in the shooting difference between the two! That is going to be very interesting! I've wanted a -2 for a while! I do love my Smiths, and so happy to add another!
