Model 27-2 Top Checkered Top Strap.

The checkered top strap was standard on all Model 27 revolvers, regardless of finish. This goes all the way back to the first .357 Magnum in 1935. It continued until production ceased on the Model 27.

Not only are/were all "Model .357 Magnum" and "Model 27s" of all dash numbers checkered on the top strap, barrel rib, and rear sight leaf, these are the only S&W Models that ever had this feature!

Best looking Wheelgun ever

JP is absolutely correct. I wish 627s were the same way. In my eyes, the Model 27 with a 3 1/2 inch barrel is the best looking revolver ever made.

The Model 27 as I have said was My 1st Handgun. First love's are always important, when I found and bought a 3 1/2" Blue a Bucket List Firearm was checked off. It has the proportions and workmanship not to mention a perfect caliber to put it on the short list of the most Beautiful Handguns ever.

standard on all model 27's as mentioned.Nice to look at but tends to be a bit of a lent trap when wiping down the gun.Personal pet peeve I had with the ones I owned.

Pictures of the first postwar .357 Magnum I owned, showing the checkered top strap. A five screw revolver, it letters to May, 1952. The gold bead in the Patridge sight was an aftermarket addition, but it worked well. I ended up selling this gun to a man who was born on exactly the same day that the revolver left the factory. :)
