In the middle 70's our department switched to Model 39 + 59's. I sold the Model 27 I previously carried.(What an idiot). The 27 had factory target hammer, trigger, and grips. 6" ventilated rib barrel. I have never seen another with that barrel. Is it possible that my memory is flawed on that feature. Was the 27 supplied from S&W with a ventilated rib barrel?

Thanks for the help.

No, the Model 27 never had a ventilated barrel, but the Colt Python did. Some S&W's were customized and fitted with a Python barrel (often called a "Smolt" or a "Smython"), but I can't imagine a department issuing them.

I suspect that you are confusing the Colt Python with the S&W model 27. The Python did feature a vent rib barrel with a full length underlug. The model 27 has never been offered from the factory with a vent rib barrel and the rare editions of the model 27 that featured dovetail cuts for a handgun scope only looked like a vent rib to a quick cursory glance.

The other possibility is that it may have been fitted with an after market ventilated rib. Do you recall what the sights were like, if they looked standard or perhaps had a bead on the front sight?

Thanks guys. I knew or figured my memory was creating that feature. Absolutely a 27. Not a departmental issue. In those days we had the choice of Smith or Colt. We purchased our duty weapons and received an allowance along with our uniform allowance. I am very familiar with the Python. Nice looking revolver but I very much preferred the cylinder release of the S&W. Colts pull to the rear release seemed cumbersome.

I now know why I can't find a replacement for that gun. Sure wish I had held on to it. Got caught up in the "newer better" syndrome.

Thank you again for setting me straight.

S&W 27s did NOT have factory ventilated rib barrels.
