Model 27 Find...

When I first got interested in S&W revolvers, I learned one hard fact: Vintage examples do not show up all that frequently in rural northern Wisconsin (if one does, they tend to be "shooters", not safe queens, which suits me OK) Sure, there's the internet, but that's just not as much fun as finding a treasure somewhere. I found this one not too long ago...I hope it turns out I hit the right forum classification...a 4 screw, 6.5" Model 27 no dash, serial S 186073, wearing walnut diamond target stocks and with some bluing wear and an occasional small freckle. I thought it cleaned up pretty good - I was hoping for somewhere around a 1958 ship date??? Thanks for looking!

Beautiful 6 1/2 inch, that's a handgun to be proud of. I gave up finding a 6 1/2 and settled on a 6 inch. Nice find.

The closest SN to S 186073 on my list is S1864xx shipping in 4/59. Not to say yours couldn't have shipped in 1958 but I don't show any with a nearby SN which did.

S182,000 – S194,499……Late 1958 – Early 1959 (manufacture)

Not disagreeing with DWalt, but your gun had to have been put-up (assembled) no earlier than mid 1958 or so since it is model number marked. 1959 is likely for a ship date.

No worries. I've owned both and think the six-inch is actually a little better balanced and may be easier to find holsters for. Velocity difference in this case is small, not worth fretting over.


OP in WI: If your gun has the target hammer and trigger, the target stocks may be original to it.
