Model 27 Rust?

Just pulled out my Model 27 Classic and noticed the internal lock had this discoloration? Is this normal (something I've missed - or is this rust?). I tried cleaning it with oil to no avail.

I have a Model 29 Classic and the internal lock seems to be uniform in color.

Looks like color case hardening? I don't have an IL gun, so cannot compare.

I have never taken a close look at any of the lock parts, but I will look over some tonight

I have to agree that one looks like heat discoloration from a torch and not rust.

HK, I checked the latest classic series on Smith&Wesson's website and the IL on all the blued guns look to have case color on them.

There's no documentation that I could confirm this with however.

Looking at the Factory website is not conclusive, those are not photographs

Those are 3D renderings from their CAD software

There have been no product photographs on that website for a decade or more

That said . . . I examined 5 NIB Smith & Wesson revolvers at a LGS tonight and all of the little key-ways look color case hardened. Though with some of them it is hard to tell

It sure looks like it’s case-hardened. I just look at my 2018 Model 27 and it is uniform in color, but then the case-hardening on my trigger and hammer is pretty subdued, too.

Got a response back from S&W today... they say its color case so seems like everyone was right!
