Model 28-2 “hammer push”

I recently bought a model 28 Patrolman that looks new in box. The gun had no indications of use so I didn’t check hammer push. When I got home I checked it and it pushed with an estimate one one to two pounds, not measured but very light. I pulled the side plate on another model 28 and checked the hammer and sear profile side by side with a magnifying glass. It didn’t appear that the gun had any modifications or polishing done.

I’m appears this gone may have come from Smith like this. I welcome your input on this and where to get repaired. I want to choose the person for repairs carefully. Thanks!

Could be the rebound slide spring has been cut or replaced, but considering that you have a additional 28 just swap parts until you find which one is the culprit starting with the hammer.

I may give that a try but the profile or shape looks identical on all parts.

There are lots of fit variables. Pin location on both the frame and in the hammer and trigger. So forth. Dimensional variability. You may be able to swap hammers and triggers back and forth between the two guns to find a fit that works properly/safely in both.

If someone has gone after the single action notch with more than a tiny touch of a stone you may be in need of parts.

Checking both the rebound and main spring for proper tension first is a good idea.

Push off is an easy fix for a trained armorer / gunsmith. If you had your location posted you might get a close response.

There is a S&W "dealer locator" feature on the S&W website. Type in your zip code for dealers in your area. Some of the dealers listed also list whether or not they have an armorer on staff at the shop. The armorer may not be revolver certified, but may know someone in your area who is.

Reference your push off, the "repair" could be something as simple as a thorough cleaning and flushing out of the internals, and replacement of the rebound slide spring with a new OEM spring. If you are able, take a look at your rebound spring to make sure it's OEM, and is not cut or aftermarket. Proper tension of the hammer by the mainspring, and on the trigger via the rebound slide spring is critical to the proper functioning of the SA hammer/trigger interface.
