Model 28-2 I'm in love

I'm only VERY new on this board, I find it great there is so much interest in 28-2. I love them, have 1 for 9 years, came from a collector with original blue box, the whole deal, the collector never shot it, so rather than 'waste' a good gun, I've put a few through it over the years. for me the 28-2 is the most useful of any hand ejector I have owned or used. This week found and purchased anothergood example, waiting for it to be shipped.
Personally I prefer the 5 to 6 inch barrel models, also in Australia, for the last 6 or so years we have had restrictions on barrel length. I wish i could buy 28-2 wall paper for my gun room.

Welcome to the site. I also like the 28s. It is a very utilitarian type piece. What type grips does your -2 have? What loads are you shooting?

I have genuine wood grips on one and on the newer one I have a Hogue monogrip. As soon as I am able I get a set of traditional style wood grips replace the Hogue.
As far as loads go, I have been extremely fortunate, in 2007 the World Police & Firegames were held in my city. I was the range manager and finished up with close to 6,700 factory loads of various brands and type. I'm almost finish using them, and after giving other club members lots of brass, I'll soon be reloading for the 28-2. I have tried a few loads over the last 3-4 months. This is what I like; 135gn projectile with 5.1gn of ADI brand AS30N this gives a brisk 1210fps at the muzzle. I have allso played with 150gn projectile using ADI brand AP70N (faster than the 30) both 6.7gn for 1255fps and 4.0 gn for 800fps. What loads are you using?

I only have two loads I use. First is my range load that I use with 148 gr. DEWC with bullseye powder. My high steppin loads are 158gr. JHP with Win 296 and mag primers. I have played around with 158gr. Ranier copper plated rounds but I can't seem to get as good accuracy with them in any of my 357s.

People seem to go gaga over the Highway Patrolman (28) for reasons I don't understand. It's a perfectly fine revolver, but it is an economy model with a lesser finish than the much more deluxe M27. I hear folks going on and on about how beautiful their HPs are, some even saying they prefer the HP to the 27 in appearance. To each his own, I guess, but saying a 28 is prettier than a 27 is crazy, I say, just crazy.

I've had two 28s and a 1954 HP over the years. Sold the 28s and still have the HP only because it failed to sell when I put it up for auction recently. Like I said, it's a fine gun. But it's a service revolver, not a deluxe model. I hold the HP in one hand and a 27 in the other and I know which one I would keep.

Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder. My Model 28-2 that I wouldn't trade for any 27 that I've seen ... not so far anyway.

Glad ya likle it , and can have it. Got an early one myself (5-screw/6in) and love it.
We hear nothing but horror stories about handgun ownership on Oz , as bad as New Jersey.

Yes, 28's are beautiful. I have owned my 28 since 1973 when I paid $110 which included 4 boxes of 357 ammo. They are ugly ducklings but beautiful swans. ENJOY YOUR 28.

No question that the finish on my 28 is not nearly as shiny as that of my 27 and yes, the cross-hatching on the top strap of my 27 is prettier than the plain matte surface on top of my 28. But, you know what? The bullets don't seem to care an iota what's on the outside of the gun! My two shoot equally well, which is to say very well indeed, and that's enough for me.

You are 100% correct. I use the same argument when people trash my 27 Classic vs my 27-2. That bullet doesn't know if it came from the 28, either of the 27s or the 686. It is kinda like the Lexus vs the Toyota thing.

My 28 research is what brought me to the forum, and it has been a wealth of information. I think part of the charm of the 28 is that the intent of the gun was completely utilitarian and law enforcement. People seem to be amazed that the ugly duckling turns out to be the belle of the ball (I know, mixed metaphors) when it comes to range time.

I love my 28 as well and I don't have to worry about getting finger prints on it. Mine is dead nuts at 25 yards with 158gr XTP's over 15gr of H-110.

Well, I don't have a 27 to compare but I do have a M-29 and a M-28-2. The M-29-2 is a safe queen. The 28-2 is up for almost anything attimes I even put Hoags for rough use. They both shoot very well and I wouldn't part with either. As has already been said the bullet can't tell the finish on the outside of the barrel.

I totally agree the 27 is a much better finished firearm. However I point out I am not one of those saying the 27-2 or any HP is better. I just love the fact that you can load em up when you wish, I understand that goes for a 27 as well.
