model 28-2 new in box...but not really

Doesn't look NIB to me, but what do I know. Could also be poor photos...but why no pic of the box?

It might be a tad high, but if you're happy with the price what else matters? The pictures are not real high quality but from what I can see there is little evidence of a turn line, and no wear at all on the trigger and hammer case hardening. It just might be a true NIB, which would be pretty cool. I'd pay that price for one.

Not to pop your bubble, but I think I see scuffs on the cylinder and some muzzle wear partly hidden by glare. It may have been carried but not fired, and is NIB in that sense -- the seller, stretching the definition to suit his needs. I'm sure he's disappointed, so take some comfort in that.

I could be wrong, but I didn't think these ever came with targets.

I'm pretty sure its not nib. I caught the turn line and wear at the end of the barrel. Doesn't bother me any, I'm looking for a shooter.

So I just won this auction on gunbroker: From What is there did I do good or get scammed?
thanks

I don't think you got scammed. Of course, by the time you pay shipping, the gun's up to $610, and then you'll probably have to pay some sort of transfer fee when you pick the gun up from the FFL dealer who receives it for you.

But I'd probably have paid that price...the 6-inch 28-2 is one of the best shooters you can find these days. And even though this one doesn't look NIB, (it's hard to tell from such bad photographs) I think you did okay.

You don't say when the gun was manufactured/shipped, but I'm guessing it's an N-series serial number. The stocks don't look original, but who knows? And really, who cares? You have yourself a great shooter. If you end up not liking it, you can sell it. As has been discussed at length on this forum, Model 28s aren't getting any cheaper.

I think production stopped in mid 80's. Nothing sits around that long without getting handled a bunch. Turn line might just be from dry firing. Can you tell if it was ever shot?

The seller only has one negative rating. I did not look it up though.

Hope it is a good one. And if your not happy with it you can get your money back eventually the way the prices are going up on the 28-2. Especially so if you have the box and/or any paperwork.

Good luck!

The ad says it's with all factory items. If that includes the SAT, they go for big bucks alone. The characteristics include 5" barrel length. I thought the M28 came only in 4" and 6" with some rare 3 - 1/2" guns. Don't know for sure. Maybe you have purchased a rare M28.
All that notwithstanding, I don't think you paid too much. When I was buying only locally, I paid near that for a M28 4" (gun only) and was happy to get it. The M28 is a great gun. You shouldn't be disappointed.

I think production stopped in mid 80's.

The 28 was produced from 1954-1986...a 32-year run. And I'd say Smith & Wesson got its money's worth out of the gun. Its popularity and durability remain undiminished 28 years after the last one was made.

I don't know about other states, other areas of the country, but you just don't see that many of them for sale around here until the gun show comes to town. And even if you do find one of any barrel length in an LGS, you'd be doing good to get away with it for less than $650.

well i'm glad to hear mostly positive feedback so far. once i get some more pics i'll post them. thanks everyone.

If there are scratches on the cylinder and muzzle wear (the muzzle wear could be glare, I can't tell), I wouldn't be happy. If it were me, I would send a message to the seller and ask them directly if there are scratches on the cylinder, muzzle wear, or any other undisclosed blemishes. I would also ask if the box indicates that the gun shipped with target stocks. If you don't like their answers, tell them that they misrepresented the gun and you don't want it, or negotiate a different price. IMO, a "new" gun doesn't come with scratches and muzzle wear.

If you aren't going to be happy with the deal, tell the seller sorry, and find another one.

Looks like a very nice shooter purchased at a nice price. Looks clean with some wear here or there. Good job.

Sorry doesn't look NIB to me either. BTW Several years ago I posted a NIB UNCOCKED 4" 28 (with box etc) here on the board for sale at $695.00. It sold 12 MINUTES after I posted it. I didn't need it as I already own a 4" & 6". Bought it from a friend and flipped it.

Glare, not wear.

I'm betting the muzzle wear others commented on is glare. It's an old blued Smith & Wesson in nice shape. What more could you ask for? Let us know how it looks in person when you get it.

Here there's one that's going for $1,000 no box, nothing. Knowing the seller it's in worse condition too.

You did great in my opinion. I feel just wait and see where the prices are going on these and the m27 / m27-2.

S&W 28-2..My favorite gun..Get a set of magnas for it..Magnas and ''HP'' mean business....

You did good. The gun is in great shape regardless of if it is new. If its not, I'd leave feedback to that effect.

ALL Smiths are fired, at least at the factory. Were it mine, I'd be shooting it anyway, so the NIB thing wouldn't interest me much anyway. Oh, and it's a 6", not a 5. There were some 28s made in 5" (RARE) some in 8 3/8", a few in Nickel (DANGED RARE), but non factory catalogued in 3 1/2". That would be the 27, and they dropped that option in the 70s IIRC.

Enjoy it, and please post the specifics and some pics in the Ultimate HP thread when it comes home!

The finish looks pretty good to me, although it's hard to tell glare from wear. And it's P&R!

You may want to check for signs of a re-finish, when you get to examine it in person.

Definitely a 6" barrel (that was one of the very few other options: 4" or 6"). The seller either made a typo or he measured it wrong.

Last fall, I bought a 4" M58 from a guy here locally (Texas). It was basically "N.I.B". It had no turn ring or any evidence of surface distress. He sold it to me for $550. The one you bought may be a little too high, but it is the ballpark.
The M58 is sort of a freak. Most people do not like it because of the caliber and scarcity of ammo, but there is an avid group of people that love them.

After shooting mine with factory loads, I am sort of on the fence. I love the way it feels in my hand, but the recoil is something else. I reload, so I detune my reloads to make the gun more bearable.
That being said, my favorite S&W is the 4" M29. I detune my reloads to something akin to the .44 Special and have a ball.

Hope you have fun with your new M58.

Even if its not NIB, I think you did pretty good, how much cheaper do you think you could have gotten one for? my guess is not much. In my area these were going for $450 almost 10 years ago and that was without a box and goodies.

Not a good gun, a GREAT Gun.

You paid a good price. The Grips alone are worth $100 to $125, not that you will part it out.

It will handle any .357 loads out there.

I am not a huge fan of the 6" barrel, but that is just me.

It is in real nice shape. If I wanted a 6", i would have went higher.

I paid like $580 for my 4" Highway Patrolman, and it had more wear, a few freckles and Pachmyrs.

You did well. If you ever need to get your money back on it, you will.
