Model 28-2

Today I ran across a model 28-2. Serial number dates it to 1974-1977. It has target stocks, and a red ramp front sight.

My question is, How common is a red ramp sight? and if it really did come this way from the factory, would it be more likely that the target stocks are original?

Are these two options uncommon enough that it would be worth while to letter this one?

In general I would be in the camp of not lettering a 28-2 (unless factory nickel).

What price tag is on it?

I don't think that combination is that common though.

I bought it because it is in pretty good shape and the price was $450.00.

This was the first time I have ever seen a red ramp sight on a model 28. I did look at the ultimate 28 thread and saw a few more. That was what made me wonder if the target stocks were maybe original.

I just thought if it was a rare option it might be worth verifying if they were original. The only way I know to verify it is to letter the gun.

I agree with Flint Ridge & save my $50 on the letter and buy some ammo. That is a good price on a fine gun! Any pictures?!

I was very common back in the day to switch the stocks from Magna to Target for guys with larger hands so I would doubt if they are original to your revolver and I would also save the $50 for ammo or your next revolver.

I also have a 28-2 with TT, TH, TS, RR, and WO. I was also told by forum members to save my money on a letter, but I'm still curious. The original owner of the gun told the seller that it came from S&W this way. If S&W didn't do the work, somebody did a dang nice job. The red ramp front sight looks identical to my other revolvers that came from the factory with one.

About what year is yours? I wondered if this was more common during the mid to late 70's??? It seems like more of my guns from that time period have more options.

The guy I bought this from told me the same thing. He said he bought it new and it came this way. Only problem with this is, this perticular guy is as full of sh** as a christmas goose.

Dale Storey, the gunsmith in Casper upgraded (collectors would say destroyed) a lot of S&Ws with front sight inserts in the 80s. He put a lime green one on a 28-2 for me. A great low light set-up in the days before handguns acquired flashlights and lasers.

The target stocks being factory is more likely than the red ramp. The SCSW mentions a few left the factory with RR (stamped NYSP and 1 salesman special). It's my understanding the RR was not an option for the 28.

With all that said....never say never when talking about S&W.

Enjoy that 28. I'd probably save the $50 and put it toward my next HP....I'm addicted to them.

One of my 28-2's has a white outline rear sight but no red ramps. I don't know if it came with that rear sight and I don't care. I just like shooting that gun.

In the mid 70s, the model 28 shipped standard with black sights and Magna grips. You could special order target stocks, but if I recall correctly, you could not get any other options. We added sight inserts, white outline blades and changed hammers and triggers if we wanted anything other than the standard ones. I would think anything that shipped in other than standard configuration would have been special ordered by someone with some pull at the factory. That was a long time ago and my memory may not be complete.

Well, That is another strike against this being original. It doesn't have a white outline rear sight blade.

I am thinking you might be right Buford 57. Seeins to how it is close to Casper, He might very well be the guy who did the red ramp.

Oh well, I will find out if it is a good shooter as soon as the weather gets better. Then I will do my best to wear it out.

That's a nice one. I have heard that The New York State Police had ordered the M-28 with the RR front and WO rear sight. A letter may or may not confirm this. The red insert was all the rage for awhile and it may have been done at a later date.

After another look at the red insert, I do not think it is factory. It is hard to tell from the one photo, but I think that the insert does not look like the factory contour.

In the middle 80's John Jovino sold NYSP 28's that had red ramp white outline sights. Some were marked NYSP some were not. I bought numerous 28's from them during that time period and they were all virtually new, with factory box and a used holster. $225.00@ if memory serves me correctly
