Here are a few pictures of my model 28's.In the first pictures of the 6" guns the top left one is a 5 screw pre 28 with all matching numbers including the grips.The one in the middle on the left is a 4 screw 28 no dash with all matching numbers including the grips.The bottom left is another 4 screw with all matching numbers but the grips.The ones on the right are all 28-2 guns.The top is an S prefix with the bottom two being N prefix guns.The parkerized gun is one of my most accurate guns I own.

The next pictures are my 4" guns.The two on the left are 5 screw pre 28's.The top one has polished hammer and trigger and is a great shooter.The bottom left is all matching numbers including the grips.The middle guns are 4 screw model 28 no dash guns.The top and bottom middle guns look unfired except from the factory.The right side guns are 28-2's.The top an S prefix and the bottom an N prefix.

Very nice collection! It looks like you have representatives of all the eras and the common barrel lengths. Now you need a factory nickel gun and an 8 3/8"!
 
No wonder the rest of us cannot find one to purchase! Nice collection you have there scout.
 
Very, very nice! I'd be happy to store those for you, you know, so the Cali government doesn't see them as a threat and try and confiscate them. :rolleyes:

Wow! Considering what the prices have gone to recently I bet you feel pretty good.

So, how long have you been after the 28's?

EEEK - you're in Kalifornia - that's the Mother Lode then.
 
Very nice. In your pics of the 4" guns is the 5 screw, top left, more glossy looking than the others? By glossy I mean leaning toward the finish of a 27. The reason I ask is on Sun. at a show I was shown a Pre 28, 5 screw that I thought was a Pre 27 at first glance due to the finish. Numbers matched except grips and no refinish stamps. The bottom of the trigger guard and the sight plane were dull, S/N was S 111520 which dates to 1954-55. Thanks for any help.
 
Very nice, thanks for sharing. I only have one each 4" & 6" Mod. 28s. A 6" no-dash and a 4" 28-2 and appriciate what you have accumulated there.

Hi wetdog, i held that gun also. It looked very nice. The bbl did have a purplish hue. I have his number if you want it. Just pm me.
 
Thanks for all the nice comments.I have been chasing after these for about four years now.Every time I see one it seems to be a little different than one I already have so I talk myself into picking it up.I have large hands and love the N frame guns.I hardly shoot my K frame guns anymore as I really like these model 28's.I forgot to mention,I have another 6"gun,a 28-3 sitting at my FFL dealer I get to pick up Thursday.:D

My gun does not have any rework stamps on the bottom either.But it does look very shiny and polished.The more I look at it the more I think it might of been refinished.The guy I got it from told me it was not refinished just buffed very good to a real shine.The price was right and it is a great shooter so I can't complain.
 
The finish varied on the earlier Highway Patrolmen, some, as you have seen, were polished nearly as well as the pre-27s. I have seen the plum coloring on some earlier guns too. It happens to some, particularly on the cylinders. It adds character IMO.
 
Is the factory finish for a Model 28 kind of a dull blue ?
I saw a pretty nice 4" at a pawnshop last week for $450. Don't know much about that model. The price sounded OK but I wasn't sure. The bluing was dull and wasn't sure if that was the original finish.
I've learned over the years to stick with what you are familiar with or find out more and go back.
 
Factory finish is a matte blue. There were a very small number of them produced in factory nickel . You might take a look at the Ultimate Highway Patrolman thread to get some ideas of the finish variants. Some of the commemorative Model 28 revolvers were highly polished, the Washington State Patrol commemorative for one.
 
Very nice collection.

My favorite S&W. With target stocks, it is to me the best looking handgun ever made. ;)
 
Go back and offer them $375 out the door and see what they say. $450 is a good OTD price. You have to know they only gave $225 or less for it. Probably less if it was pawned. That's how I got my 28-2...$450 OTD.
