Does anybody out there do a passable copy of the old Highway Patrolman blue? I called S&W years ago and they said they don't do that anymore. I don't know how they did it -- was it the chemical formula? Time in the tank? -- but I'd like to have a part blued and be a pretty close match. I bought a new, unfired 6-inch 28-2, and am a little disappointed that the yoke apparently didn't get the same factory polish as the rest of the gun. It's a flat, slightly rough texture. The color is a close match for the rest of the frame, but the 'flat' look annoys me, since it detracts from an otherwise pristine gun. I realize it's a gamble to send one part out, but it may be worth it if I could get a close color match. If anyone would know, Smith lovers would know. : )

Here's what I'm whining about.

The only blue you are going to find other than the normal hot salts blue is charcoal/Carbonia blue. It was used by both S&W and Colt in the pre-war years. Several restoration shops can do it.
Ron?s Gun Shop. Gun bluing and gun metal finishes for antique and custom guns.
www.classicgunsinc.com
Turnbull Mfg. Co. - antique and classic handgun restoration, rifle restoration, shotgun restoration, & custom gunsmith service.

I had a Ruger Black Hawk done by Ron's Gunshop and it was a perfect job. No doubt the others can do good work as well as all have very good reputations.

The one part you reblue will never match the rest of the gun! It's an all or none proposition. Personally I think you are being a bit finicky, the gun looks great to me.
