A little back story here. I'm a young 54 year old that has had the means for a Model 29 since I joined the military back in 1984. Hell I grew up in a certain city across the bay from where Inspector Harold Francis Callahan worked but for some reason or other I never procured one. Fast forward through the years of shotguns, rifles, and Glocks... lots of Glocks. Well that damn itch hit me. I find myself in the mountainous state of Idaho for 34 years now and home of the sawtooth mountains that will take you breath away. I've always carried a gun when hiking / camping / scouting and it's always been a Glock. I've run into many wild animals with no issue what-so-ever but on my last elk scout I spooked a black bear. In the immortal words of Grandma on sixteen candles "I can hear ya breathing!". I had my G23/.40 and thought this thing will either scare it or piss it off. But lucky for me, after a false charge, she ran off.

When I got home there was that damn itch again but I thought a G40/10mm would do the trick. Folks I'm going to tell you. The 10mm fans are hard core! The claims get to the point of being rather ridiculous though with comparisons to a hot .41 or bettering that of the .357 then it hit me. They all want to be the .44 don't they? Why not just get a .44? And so I did and man oh man is this thing beautiful! I always knew my new 29-10 was going to get un-beautiful and I do not consider it a collectors item rather a tool but when I got back from the range after shooting 100 rounds of magnum I had to clean it. This is where I made a huuuuge mistake. Hoppes #9 was always used to clean my Glocks without issue. Apparently not so good for blued guns. I actually considered getting my precious cerakoted. It was actually that bad. After reading a whole lot of older wiser folks lambasting those young "cerakote on a revolver" fans I found Renaissance Wax Polish. Now? She's a shiny beaut and Jimmy is a happy man. Oh and I done learnt muh lesson. Promise.

I've been using Renaissance Wax for quite a while and it really makes a difference. I've also used Hoppes #9 since I was a youngster without a single problem with blued firearms.

Perhaps it was Hoppes then wax? I just know I didn't like the look after Hoppes and thought I'd ruined it.

I have been using Hoppe's #9 for over 40 years to clean blued guns inside and outside with no complaints.

If it is taking the blue off your gun, you are dealing with a bad blue job.

Bad Medicine

Congratulations on your new Purchase and Welcome
to the Forum.

Every Fall my Son in Wyoming takes me Elk Hunting.
Secret place we go, there is Black Bear.

I only trust Cast Lead Bullets in Semi Wad Cutters
for taking care of such matters. Lead Penetrates deep,
makes an in/out holes, not likely to Ricochet, and Destroys
all that it goes through.

My carry reload in Elk Country is currently my plinking round.
240gr .431 dia. Lead Round Nose Flat Point
5.6grs Alliant Red Dot, CCI LP #300 primer
Brass is Winchester, Remington, Federal, Starline.
Crimp is what I call medium roll crimp.
FPS approximately 825.
Bullets tumbled lube with Ben's Liquid Lube,
for Lead free barrel performance.
Primers no where near flat.

Below are my 357 Reloads w/SWC bullets.
Their in a Red Box for a Reason. You get the idea.

Also one of my Mountain Guns/44Mag sometimes
the 45Colt MG.
I carry, depending what mood I am in.

Well we all know the blueing process changed for S&W years ago so it may be that but the look after cleaning with hoppes did not make me a happy man. After the wax? Back to the way it was. That's something ain't it? She falls in a well, eyes go crossed. She gets kicked by a mule, they go back to normal. I dunno. Hoppes is now reserved for my Glocks and I'm using what I've used in the Military for my 29. CLP.

The Blues

Oh, I forgot. From what I understand the New S&Ws have a
Bluing that is not compactable with Hoppes (with Ammonia in
it).

The S&W uses a different Bluing process now, than the Old School S&Ws did.

What does the Owner's Manual say?

Below is all I use anymore; Synthetic Motor Oil and Soft
Makeup Rounds (don't even buy Cleaning Patches either).
Nothing says you need to use Pre Cut Patches.

All you're doing is wiping off the Soot/residue anyway. It also
leaves an Oil barrier to protect/lube the Gun Metal. I do have
Hoppes (only for the Bore), but rarely use it.

Wyoming is some beautiful country. The family and I head to either Grand Targhee or Jackson Hole every winter for a week or so to tear up those slopes. We've done a lot of hiking in and around Wyoming and Montana as well. Tell me are you running into less Elk due to the wolf population? They're pushing the elk here to harder to get to areas but the upside is I get to see more country!

Dog Days

Hard to tell about the Wolfs, their Range can
be far and wide. I wouldn't doubt Wolfs are
there in our Secret Place.

At our Secret Place, we keep seeing Elk pictures
on the Trail Cam though, some times Black Bear.

Now we know Bear are there, my Defenses really
went up. The one motion picture happen in the
morning before we arrived later on.

Not just any bear my friend. Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana have more than a few Grizzlies. Say around 2000 give or take but the likelihood of any of us seeing them outside a national park is minuscule. That being said I'd much rather have my Henry 45-70 and S&W .44 with me.
