model 29-10

I was at my LGS and they had a 29-10 for just under $1000 and I think it just looks awesome.

I don't know much about revolvers. I've mainly been a semi auto guy but feel like I should have at least 1 wheel gun. This would mainly be a range toy and maybe go camping with me as well.

What makes a revolver good/better than another revolver?
Would the 29-10 make a good gun?
Would you buy something different?
Is that price a good deal (in California)?

29-10s came in a variety of configurations. The $1000 seems high (here in Indiana) unless it is a special model - engraved, etc.

I have seen quite a few favorable comments about the 29-10s among members here. Guns I have seen in person looked good, but this was just casual evaluation in gun shops. Traditionalists will object to the integral lock. That is a personal choice. I am more concerned about the quality of the barrel. I would have a really good look at the inside of the barrel. If the interior looks like something that water has eroded away over the last 50,000 years (as in an ECM barrel), I would pass.

As to buying something different, for a shooter my first choice would probably be a 29-5, but finding those is getting tough. If you prefer round butt guns, the 29-6 is basically the same gun with the RB frame. You would be buying a used gun (no warranty) as opposed to a new one with lifetime warranty.

Here in NorCal a local gun shop has one available in Nickel. $999. It was marked down from a $1099 a few weeks ago.

I think they are fine guns from what I've heard.

whats wrong with an ECM barrel? from what i've read it seems like its better?

I have one of these wonders in a 329PD. It nearly makes you ill to look at, but the gun is so difficult to shoot it is hard to judge how much it affects accuracy. It is so rough I don't shoot much lead in the gun any more because cleaning it is a nightmare. If you saw it you would understand.
