Model 29-2 birthday?

Hey everyone,

I am semi-new to this forum in that I have been looking for a Model 29-2 for quite some time and in the process reading up all the information I could to get educated. The end result is I purchased one recently and I was wondering if anyone could help me with its DOB. I am curious as to exactly how old the gun is for its condition (which is amazing). Pictures will be coming soon.

It is an N prefix and the first 3 numbers are 120. Any help is greatly appreciated and I look forward to sharing my experiences with you.

As an aside, depending on the year, I have read conflicting posts about whether or not this gun may hold up to the newer magnum rounds, I do reload but factory magnum is what I would carry in the woods and such. Thanks ahead of time folks.

Welcome to the forum, and a great gun to buy just about everyones favorite. What barrel length and finish? As for manufacture dates they are approximate.
N1 1969-1972
N100000 1973

Smith & Wesson did not record serial number by a "date of birth" or manufacture date. Their records are predicated upon the date that the weapon shipped from the factory. N120832 shipped in May '73. Hope that helps.

Thank you for the response, it helps quite a bit, that puts this gun in 73.

It is blued, 6 1/2 bbl. I got it on an auction site and hope to pick it up today or tomorrow. As I said originally, I will be posting pictures when I get it
