I have an opportunity to purchase a model 29-2 with the 8 3/8 barrel. It is in the original box with an unused bore brush and swab. The owner is the original purchaser and says he never shot it. I was doing some internet searching and a fair purchase price is across the board. The gun is also in stainless steel which all places say it is a model 629. It is stamped Mod 29-2 and the serial number begins with N6xxxxx. It has wood/checkered grips and an adjustable rear sight. It is a beautiful pistol that seems to be in mint to near mint condition. Any insight to the SS finish and value would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

The Model 629 with an 8 3/8-inch barrel did not appear until around serial number N778000. It appears as though your 29-2 has been refinished to look like stainless steel (or the original nickel finish has dulled significantly). Model 629s have an S stamped in the extractor rod shroud and a V on the rear surface of the cylinder.

The Model 629 began at serial number N629062 and the first few hundred had a 6-inch barrel.

The 29-2 was never made in stainless, only blue. The stainless guns are 629s. The serial number listed as N6xxxxx does not help much. The first 100 pre-production guns were serial numbered N629062 to N629200. Standard production began in 1980 with serial number N748564 with a 6 inch barrel. Very few prototypes were fitted with a 8 3/8 barrel. So, if it is stainless it is a very rare prototype that is mismarked. Another possibility is that it has been refinished in hard chrome, which can appear to be stainless. A mismarked 629 prototype with 8 3/8 barrel would probably be worth quite a lot of dough! A refinished 29-2 as described should still be worth $700-1000. I think you are going to have to investigate further.

Thanks for the welcome. Actually, I am not 100% sure it is not nickel after you stated that it may be dulled. It has been sitting in that box for over 30 years so I assumed that the nickel would be shiny. Still, I would not rule out the possibility that someone refinished it but the owner bought it in 1978 and he didn't do it. Anyway, with either finish, what do you guys think a fair price for the pistol would be. thanks again
