Model 29-2

I am so thrilled that I finally got the gun of my dreams, a S&W model 29-2, 6 1/2" barrel, blued that I had to show it off a little. Its from around 1968 - 69 with the "S" prefix in the serial number. The presentation stocks are beautiful and the rest of the gun is extremely clean except for a speck of a freckle on one side and a slight turn ring on the cylinder. The SA and DA are as smooth as silk. It came with the original wood display box (which isn't in the greatest shape), half the tools, and no papers. There is absolutely no comparison between this gun and current S&W revolvers - modern guns couldn't even come close to the beauty and function of this bad boy! No wonder "Harry" carried it under his coat !

I wouldn't dare shoot this one even though its not a gem. Will mouth drool hurt the finish ?!

Wax that baby and take it out and shoot! With care you won't hurt that finish and you'll find those 1965-80 era S&W's can shoot as good as they look.

It's your gun and you should do whatever you feel comfortable doing, but why wouldn't you shoot it? As has been said, with careful use and proper cleaning, you aren't going to hurt it. Congratulations on finding that one. 29s from that era have always been a favorite of mine.

i love all 44 mags.my first was a 29-2 that i purchased new in 1976..still have it i shoot it and it still looks new....my most recent 44 is the 629 stealth hunter from the performance center...deadly accurate

Why wouldn't I shoot it? Many forum members may find my line of reasoning silly but, here's why. I owned one of these guns that I bought new many years ago and foolishly sold it off during one of those periods in life where you find yourself in need of money. Over the years, my wife and I raised five kids, buried two, and put two through college. I'm at a point in my life where I can finally see a little financial light starting to flicker again but, its not all that bright yet. I've also managed to pick up a few very nice S&W revolvers over those years and have always wanted another 29-2 to look at, admire, shine, and toss from hand to hand when I see our old friend Harry on the television screen ! I currently also own a few other .44s' - a 29-5, 629-3, and a 629-6 (with the lock). Why would I want to take a chance and shoot my prized 29-2? This gun, as far as I'm concerned, is the cadillac of .44 mags and I believe it would be silly to shoot it and take the chance of something going wrong with it when I can take my 629-6 out and beat the daylights out of it with hot loads if I want to. The 29-2 isn't a gem but it took me a long time to get it and I plan on taking it to my box with me without flaw and looking like it does today !

Wow...very nice gun.

I'd like to get a 29 or 629 with a 6.5" barrel prelock myself...they seem to balance much better than the 8 3/8" barrels.

I have a 29-2 with 8 3/8" barrel that is nickel plated complete with the mahoganey presentation box that I bought new over 30 years ago. I really like mine, but I have retired it and don't shoot it any more--I just look at it!!

Just kidding, I understand your reasoning completely. I too have been on the hunt for another one. Many have come and gone, but I've always missed that original 6 1/2" Dirty Harry gun. I need to learn to kick myself BEFORE and not after.

Just got to LOVE an Ole 29-2. Here is a picture of mine.I don't shoot mine much, but when I do,it shoots 9 grains of Unique with a 240-250 SWC lead bullet very well. These weapons were made to shoot and enjoy. I can understand your not wanting to shoot your new treasure. By the way it is really NICE.
