Model 29-2 ?

Hello. Looking for assistance with a recent purchase, and to augment my meager S&W historical knowledge.

Model 29-2 with a serial #S25XXXX. Which stocks would’ve likely been originally fitted to this gun? I can’t tell if it would have had cokes, diamond targets or presentation smooth stocks based on my limited searches on line. Seems to be a possible mid ‘60s manufacture date? Any idea which SAT as well? I’m very impressed by the helpful experts and by the depth of knowledge here on the forum.

Probably would have diamond target grip. Coke bottle grips are possible. Best to get factory letter if you really want to know

S&W changed the S to an N at serial S333454 in 1969. The N-frames hit S25XXXX in 64-65. You didn't list enough digits to get more year-specific than sometime in the 64-66 range.

Automag...The Model 29-2 you asked about was probably shipped in 1965. It would have been shipped with coke bottle stocks as they began to to be replaced with diamond target stocks in early 1966. For reference, Model 29-2, S255037, was shipped in November 1965 and S253715 was shipped in June of that year.

The correct sight screwdriver is the one with a fluted aluminum handle and hollow ground tip that was introduced around 1964.

A factory letter will not tell you the type of stocks used the 29-2 as it is not specified on the invoice (unless a special order). It will state checkered target stocks made of Goncalo alves.

Hello Tomdrpm, I was just going through some of these old posts regarding 29-2 stocks. My ‘S’ prefix 29-2 is very, very close to your serial # - in fact I’d suggest manufactured same day. Unfortunately the pics you posted are no longer visible, and I am intrigued to see if our stocks are the same. (I have attached a pic), as you can see they have the diamond, but no ‘cut-out’ on the left side. The pistol is in beautiful unmolested condition, in it’s original case with all paperwork, tools, wrapping paper etc, so I have assumed stocks are correct, and after researching it appears that S&W did make stocks without the cut out on early 29’s. Love to get clarity. Cheers.

Those are most likely earlier stocks on it now.
They would date to the early mid 50's Yours should have the football cutout

The stocks have a larger area of checkering and a relieved area on the left stock panel. The stocks currently on your 29-2 were introduced in the early 1950s and used through 56-58.

Thanks Bill, appreciate your response. Yes, my research would indicate it was shipped 64-65. Like many, I am a sucker for 'correctness' and originality, so I guess the question now is, are these older stocks rare or of value if I choose to go on the unenviable hunt for a sensibly priced set of correct stocks (either GA or CB) - or a long shot, maybe find someone who has the later correct 29-2 stocks on an earlier 29 looking to swap.
