Hi all I joined this forum yesterday because I picked up a model 29-2 nickel plated 44mag with 6 inch barrel. The firearm has never been fired, I have the original display box (the blue felt is peeling off),manual and tools. This firearm was sitting in a closet for like 25yrs is what I was told so when it picked it up the blue felt was stuck on the one side. After wiping it down I feel it needs to be polished. I have never cleaned nickel and was wondering if you guys can help? Also if someone can tell me a little info like year it was made and approximate value.
MODEL 29-2
Serial number- N631079

Do it with Flitz, just lightly, and then coat it with Renaissance wax.
You won't recognize the gun when you're done! You can't put too many coats of Renaissance Wax on it!

If you want to have the box restored, inside and out, back to factory perfection, Member JCELECT on here does them well!

Restore, Polish and Protect Metals, Fiberglass, Paint and more!

Renaissance Wax Polish | TALAS

Those are both available on Amazon, but for some reason the amazon links were not working.

The manufacture year for that revolver is 1979, and with the presentation case, tools and paperwork, it's worth in the $1400-$1600 range, I'd say, maybe a bit more. Nickel plating brings a premium over a blued gun. I have a nickel M29-2, SN N662877 that has a ship date of 27 July 1979. Yours was probably a few months earlier than mine. I gave $1300 for mine back in 2019, a 50th Anniversary NCHP Commemorative.

Thank you. Do I have to be careful how hard I rub?

Luvsmiths is right on. Clean it with Flitz and don't worry about rubbing it hard. It won't hurt the nickel, but it sure will make it shine. Use an old washcloth or clean dishrag to apply the Flitz and rub the gun, then wipe it off and buff it with an old diaper or microfiber cloth. It might take a few applications to get the old oxidation, grime and fingerprints off. Once you have it as clean and shiny as you can stand, apply the Renaissance wax the same way, let it dry to a haze, and then wipe it off and buff it. The wax coating won't show fingerprints

When I got my M29-2, it had fingerprints imbedded in the oxidation and took me several hours of applying, rubbing and applying and rubbing until I got the gun clean.
Here are a couple of before pics, right after I got the gun, and a couple of after pics once I got it cleaned and waxed.

Flitz and several other polishes (I use Wenol in the blue tube) work well on nickel, but proceed carefully and only rub as hard as necessary to achieve the desired results.

Nickel tarnishes. Going over the surface with a mild polish, I use Simichrome, on a quality microfiber cloth will bring the factory shine back.

Using ammonia based solvents like Hoppes #9 tends to cloud the nickel finish. After cleaning the bore and chambers make sure you remove all traces of the ammonia.

Welcome to the Forum, Sheepdog. Very nice acquisition- there are lots of .44 Magnum and Model 29 fans here on the Forum, and tons of information. ANIB with the case and tools, probably worth upwards of $1800. You've already received lots of good advice on how to clean up your new nickel 29-2, and how to get your mahogany presentation case restored. I picked up my 6" nickel Model 29-2 a couple of years ago at a local gun show, s/n N771902 (ca. 1980). I thought that I got a real deal for $950 OTD, but when I got home and took it apart to clean it, I found out that for some reason it had been factory re-nickeled (grip frame stamped "RN 1/89"). No big deal...S&W did a great job with the finish, and it's a beautiful revolver and fun to shoot. Just a word of caution....44 Magnums can be addicting, and you may find yourself adding to your collection! Enjoy!

Nice pickup! When you use the Ren Wax don't let it set too long or it will be really hard to wipe off. I usually put on a coating and wipe it off right away. I use it on my blue 29-2 4".
