Hey everyone, I searched around a while here before asking, and found a wealth of information, but wanted to see if I could get opinions on valuing a Model 29.

It seems that there are a lot of variables on knowing what one of these guns may be worth. I will be checking the gun out this week some time, and wanted to see if I could get an idea on what a fair price would be.

I've checked gunbroker and some other places, and see similar guns going for around $800 +/-, but wasn't sure if I was missing something or not.

About the gun:

Smith Model 29, nickel plated, 8 3/8" barrel, S/N: N301xxx

Seller says it is in "brand new" condition, and it comes with the original presentation box, however he has a scope mounted on it, so I'm assuming it's been shot a bit, just well cared for I'm hoping.

From my searching, I've put this gun as a 1975-1977. Can't seem to narrow that down any further than that yet.

He's asking $1000. I'm thinking this may be a bit on the high side? What would some of you that know more about these guns say would be a fair price range on something like this?

Thanks.

$1000 seems a bit steep. Somewhere in the $600-$800 range is closer to reality in my part of the country. There is also a price difference between 29-2 and 29-3, with the premium going to the 29-2.

If it has been drilled for the scope that will lower value as well. A 29-2 8 3/8" Nickle was for sale on GB from a shop near me. Gun was in great shape, pres box, tools etc. Sold for around $850

Thanks for the replies so far everyone.

I know very little about these guns, other than what I've found in my searches the last couple of days.

As for telling a 29-2 vs. a 29-3...will the gun be stamped 29-2 or 29-3? I was thinking it was dependent on the date that it was produced, therefore this gun being serialized as a 1975-77 range would place it as a 29-2. I read that the 29-3 weren't produced until around 1983? I could be incorrect on this though.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong. Any help in being able to correctly identify this gun is appreciated.
