Getting a new 29-10 and am shopping for replacement wood grips. Budget is up to $150. I have seen some for much cheaper on ebay. Not made in USA. Are they junk?

I really like the look of the reddish colored wood grips on some of the older 29s. Having a hard time finding any like that.

Any suggestions on a quality set? Thanks in advance.

2x on John Culina's grips. His forum name here is "Kurac". He has a WTS add here on the forums under Accessories. His product will be toward the top of you budget. You will also find original S&W grips here for well with in your price range.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am emailing him now as a matter of fact.

Have a good thanksgiving everyone.

X 2 on Ahrends. Gripseller on eBay. Maybe look at his dark walnut stained maple, or the red stained maple. I like the retro targets.

I like the retro target style in general but Ahrends only seems to have one type (walnut) available on their site.

Will the original grips from the late 70's and early 80's fit ? If they will I have replaced the original Goncalo Alves with rosewood and the take offs are all checkered S&W N frame grips. All are as new. jrm53, Jeff

Here is my 629 Mountain Gun with a set of Altamont grips. I assume they are CNC machined and as such the fit is tight with good seams.

I like to tinker, so I end up rounding off the sharp edges and corners on mine. Overall, I'm pleased. If I were to do it again I would skip the finger ridges on the front.

I'm sure custom handmade grips are nice however, you can get a set of Altamonts for less than half of your budgeted $$$ amount.

I see a lot of conversion grips have a rounded bottom. Yet the grips that come on the gun are a flat more traditional looking type. Weird how that is.

Doesn't the 29 come with Altamonts? I thought they were pretty skinny?

That doesn't seem all that bad but is it imported or made here? The review seems to state it is larger than the stock grips and fits the 29-10.

Hogue makes some fine wood monogrips and they can often be found used on ebay, etc. Their Cocobolo is very reddish. Ahrends Tactical Revolver and Retro Targets are great choices too. If you don't mind laminated wood, Alatamont makes some nice grips at attractive prices. All three makes have flawless fit and finish and are made in the USA.

My 29-10 wears a Hogue Fancy Hardwood Monogrip with contrast stripe and grip cap. They are under your $150 budget, though I scored these used for $75.

By the way, you won't find many new grips is Cocobolo or rosewood due to both species being classified as endangered, that's why Ahrends has a limited amount of wood choices these days.

This is a hard decision. It takes a while to narrow down. The Hogue fancy woods are nice looking but I prefer a straight/flat bottom (retro target) to the stock vs. a rounded one. Pure aesthetic preference. The Hogues all appear to be rounded somewhat.

Ahrends stained maplewood retro targets look real nice to me and are flat bottom. Wish I didn't have to send a check in and could just check out with Paypal.

I'm talking to Culina right now but I think they may end up out of my price range.

I think you'll be quite happy with Ahrends Retro Targets. I am, and I can nearly palm a basketball. Not small hands. I got a pair of black/silver stained maple, with tung oil finish, for my 629 classic. Sorry no pic available at moment. They went about 120 with shipping and are as expensive a set as they make I believe. They have more wood options and stain options for sure. I already want another pair in ebony. As stated, check out the selection on line on eBay under Gripseller. She is not the maker but moves much of his product and you can look at like 12 or more pages worth of his stuff in different woods and finishes. If you don't see EXACTLY what you want their on eBay, call the Ahrends shop and they can customize any set you want. That's what I did. I like the oiled finish over a varnish for personal reasons, one of which is it won't react with cleaning solvents. It's a few bucks more. But again, you top out well under 150 for a truly NICE set of artisanal grips. Don't know if your 29 is square or round butt but it doesn't matter as they make round to square conversions for the targets too. Which is what I bought. If I can dig up a pic quick i'all post it.

My 629 has the standard hogue rubber grips. They fit OK. I can't see going any bigger than that. My hands are medium size. It would be nice to test fit different grips but much like trying to select wheels for a car it just isn't realistic.

Go to the woods page. Pick out what you want. Call with order. Simple.
