In late 1978 in Ohio I watched a gentleman lay $800 on the counter for a new M-29 in nickle. He had been trying to get that revolver for 6 months and was delighted to pay only $800. I was on a job interview trip and stopped at that shop to see what was on the shelf. At the time I lived in anti-gun Madison, WI
I remember buying a 6" 29-3 at a Virginia gun show in 1987 for $200.00 cash. The exhibitor literally had a pallet stacked with brand new Model 29's. I should have bought several, but only grabbed one.
Shooters Bible from 1999 list the model 29 6" barrel at $574 and the 8 3/4" barrel at $586. Considering you could probably buy them for around $100 off retail that is amazing! Interestingly a Glock 17 is listed for $616 in the same catalog...about what they are today. The profit margin on a revolver must be razor thin. Consider the machineing and skilled workforce needed for revolvers. Anyone can assemble parts such as found on polymer pistols. Kind of like the difference between Grandma's homemade chicken noodle and a can of Cambells...no comparison.
