I have conflicting information and need some clarification. I need to know if all of the early model 29's (pinned and recessed) have the grips numbered to the gun? Many thanks for the help.

S&W did not number their target stocks, so the answer to your question is no, the stocks on the Model 29 are not numbered to the revolver.

So . . . not to kick this dead horse, but for a 29-2, the factory grips will not be numbered? Also, will all factory correct grips be checkered for the 29-2 or could a gun have smooth (no checkered panel) target grips?

Gotta love us newbies.

Thanks.

Standard was checkered. Smooth Targets were sold separately and could be installed by a dealer.

I really like the smooth grips and have a set on one of my 29-2's and really like them and I find it better on my hand when shooting it.

The Model 29-2 was cataloged as being available with checked, target stocks made of Goncalo alves. A 29-2 could be special ordered with smooth target stocks, but this only happened very rarely. S&W did not number their target stocks, so none of the panels are numbered to the revolver. The 29-2 you are looking at most likely had its original checked, target stocks replaced with smooth ones. However, only a check of the original factory invoice will verify the type of original stocks and this will require you purchase a factory letter from S&W at a cost of $50.

Hummm... Never say never with S&W... I've just read this a few minutes ago...

Never say "always" with Smith & Wesson. This Model 28-2 came to me in the original box with the target grips numbered (stamped) to the gun. The gun with its larger grips fits perfectly in the box, and the authentic end label indicates "T" in the "Stock" box, indicating target stocks. Serial # is N568xx; Roy Jinks says it was made in September, 1980.

Philblack...I am aware that S&W did number a very few pairs of target stocks, but that is a very rare exception and I didn't think it was necessary to go into that kind of detail in this thread. As with all things S&W, there are always a few "exceptions to the rule".

Sorry... :o

My 29-2 and previous year(s) 29s have the date stamped inside one of the panels (right) in blue ink. Month and Year.
I think this became standard at some point early in the SW history.

Stamping of NT-430 and the part number was done in the 70s, but the date stamping did not appear until the 80s.
