I bought a beautiful 8 &3/8 pinned/recessed 29-2 from a friend today. Not a scratch on it. I noticed in looking at it that the right side of the rear sight sits slightly higher than the left when looking at both sides of it. Just barely noticeable when looking at the back of the frame. More notceable from the sides. Anyway, I took the sight off and moved the little threaded "keeper" under the sight around to the four corners to see if it changed, and it didn't, so I am guessing the sight itself has a slight twist along the length of it. I don't want to keep taking it off for fear of stripping/disfiguring the head of the tiny screw in the front. Is this something I am being too anal about? I thought about buying another sight and replacing it, but I don't even know how much one costs. Would you all let this bother you or not? Thanks.

Thanks, Mike. I am just obsessive/compulsive about stuff like this, so I figured I'd ask. Thank you.

It could be fine but I had a slight crack in my model 27 rear sight so I bought a new rear sight at Numrich. Easy to swap out and it would relieve your ocd

Man, I have looked EVERYWHERE I can think of to locate an older N-frame sight. Nobody has these things right now. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Thank you, but says they are out of stock. If I could get one of these, it should be a simple matter to switch the sight leaf over to it.

I will get one eventually. I basically just bought the revolver because I missed the 6" 29-2 I stupidly traded off back in the 90s. It's not like I am going to do a ton of shooting with the thing! It will be a safe queen for the most part.

Is the rear sight assembly bent, or is it just the leaf? I might remove the sight, and check it with a straight edge. If so, maybe it could be gently peened / manipulated back to shape? Of course, the machining in the frames sight channel could be off as well, though not likely. Replacement rear leaf kits are a lot cheaper & easier to find than a whole rear assembly, if that is the issue.

Pictures are worth a thousand words, but without seeing it, I am with the shoot it first and see crowd. If it adjusts on and maintains zero, I wouldn't mess with it.

My nickel 8 3/3" 29-2 had a bad rear sight. At the advice of a member here on the smithing section I now have a Weigand sight. If you don't mind non-OEM it should work for you. You get a extra 1/4" sight radius, like I needed it on the long barrel.

I took the gun to a local gunsmith today, and he put the sight in a vise wrapped in a towel, and took a large set of pliers wrapped in another one, and after a few tries, he got the thing where it is now level on the gun, with no marks on it. Total cost - $20. Now my OCD can rest easy! Thanks for the tips and links.
