Hey group, just purchased this model 29-2. As you can see it’s in very great condition. But under the right lightening it has a few marks. I can’t tell if it’s surface rust or just little scratches. If it is rust is it really something to stress about and try and take out?

If it's rust, get some Big 45 Metal Cleaner. It looks like a
Brillo pad. Will not harm blue finishes but go easy with it.
Why take a chance. If that doesn't take away the "rust"
then you know you have scratches.

I would just wet it with Kroil and rub my thumb print over lightly for a few years.
Looks like it bumped against the sight adjustment tool (screw driver) sliding around in the box. Shoot it and let us know how it does.

I would leave it as is. You stand the chance of making it worse by messing with it. To me, those are very minor imperfections. If it is going to be shot and handled alot, it will get more bumps and bruises along the way. That's what it's made for. Good luck.
Thanks for the reply, I’ll give her a shot at the range and let you know. Seems like just some nicks, haven’t found any rust anywhere in the gun or in any crevice.

DO NOT use a Brillow pad on your revolver, the "metal" in the pad will scratch it worse than it is now. What I see is a non remarkable mark in the finish, and I wouldn't use anything more than good CLP and soft cloth.
Interesting, it seems like some minor marks that I guess I can live with! It’s 45 years old, I guess it’s not gonna be perfect. It definitely hasn’t been shot a lot. The bore is whistle clean and the turn ring is super light.
What does it look like under magnification? If it is surface rust, oil it and use a brass pad to lightly rub the rust away.
Just a good ole cotton rag and oil. You aint goin to make it go away.
I wasn't familiar with this product. It says it doesn't remove bluing but I would use it with very light pressure and only if you are convinced the spot is rust. If it is a bare metal spot you might make it more bare with scrubbing.

Do you have a jeweler's loupe or other magnifier? Use it! If the mark is rust it will be be reddish-brown and possibly somewhat scaley. If a scratch or scuff it will be bright.

So many people so completely unaware of Rust Bluing and what is involved in the process. It's actually a very simple process that doesn't require any toxic products. Basically you make a steel or iron product get rusty and then DROP IT IN BOILING WATER. Heat to above 200 degrees in the absence of Oxygen will cause Red Rust to convert to Black Oxide.
The answer to your issue is very very simple bacause you already have the Red Rust. Drop that cylinder into boiling water for about 45 Minutes and apply some light oil to the Ejector and the surface of the cylinder after it cools enough to handle. If you feel some "bumps" then use a stiff NYLON brush on the surface to remove and of the loose black oxide that may remain.

It looks like a nice 29-2! Wouldn't worry about it. Don't tell me there will be no marks in the future. I have a 29-3. Had a 4" -2 Nickel. It's gone now. Bob

I used a Frontier Big .45 pad to clean a S & W Model 10 that had been stored in an attic for 30 years, the rust appeared as though the gun would require strip and reblue. Using the Frontier pad with Kroil I was able to remove virtually all the rust, I was surprised and the owner was more than pleased. BTW, the Frontier pad is made of a proprietary metal alloy, it is definately not the same as a pot scrubber. Pot scrubber pads are copper plated steel and will damage blued surfaces.

I've got a Chief's Special that has a side plate that is all scratched up from one of those Big 45 pads. It was upsetting to say the least. STAY AWAY!!!

Update I tried big 45 frontier nothing happened. Not scratches or anything but the marks still remain. They must not be rust lol! It seems to wipe away rust pretty good for 99% of reviews I’ve seen. So more than likely it’s just some scratches. No biggie. Still in very damn great shape and has barely been shot!!

There are very few guns of that vintage in that good of condition, although most, during the "Dirty Harry" age, never were shot much. It is certainly nothing to worry about. I would only use some good oil on it with a rag or silicone cloth and enjoy shooting it. One thing though, if you really are that particular about guns, maybe you should get one with some honest wear to shoot and sell this one off to a collector.

IMHO way too minor to worry about fooling with it and risk messing it up. It's 45 yrs old. Enjoy it.
