Hello everyone -

New to the forum. I made my way here by searching for some information. I have a Model 29 that a guy is offering in trade. He says it is a 29-5 Classic Hunter II. I can find no reference to such a model - S&W had a Classic Hunter II in another model. It appears to me he has a Classic Magnum II, or potentially a Classic Hunter. It is in excellent shape from pics, and I am estimating value at $800 range. It has 6" barrel (although could be a 6 1/2" form pcitures, not sure) Hogue grips, is blued, has full barrel underlug, orange regular ramp front site, and an unfluted cylinder. He claims it was made in 1989, is part of a limited production run, and had some sort of action/trigger work beyond a normal Model 29 from the factory. He thinks value is $1,000.

Just trying to get a read on that this is. Any input? What questions should I be asking to nail down model and consequently value?

Thanks,

Casey

Welcome to the forum.
There is a Classic Hunter M29-5 listed in the SCSW that fits that description, 6" full lug barrel, unfluted cylinder, Hogue soft rubber grips, etc. The -5 comes from 1991 and just says limited production.
There was an earlier -3 made for Lew Horton that was basically the same but it says they had a four position front sight with 5000 made in 1987.

There is also a M29-4 Classic Hunter but the book says it came with a 8-3/8" barrel. 2500 made in 1989.
